Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: May-June, 1958 Weep no more for the mourning dove at the hands of the hunter. Surveys by scientists have proven that regardless of what sportsmen may do, few doves live more than a year anyway and the hunter is responsible for less than 20 per cent of the annual dove mortality. These facts have been brought out by a cooperative dove study made by ten southern states and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife service. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries com mission's pittman-robertson section, which is headed by John D. Newsom, coordinator, conducted the study in Louisi ana. The vast majority of doves are lost -to natural mortality which includes such things as starvation, mortality caused by adverse weather conditions, predation and disease. Few of the natural deaths of these birds are as quick and clean as death by the gun of the sportsman, Newsom says. The mourning dove, the commonest dove in Louisiana, is a game bird in this state and throughout the south; in other parts of the country it is classed as a songbird. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: October 1958 Not so long ago a strange, weak creature appeared upon this planet possessing two attributes that enabled him to dominate all of the other creatures of this earth. The creature was, of course, man, and two attributes were his ability to think and also two thumbs. But for these thumbs man might have been destroyed long ago by larger animals and naturally that goes vice versa for his ability to think. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: April 1958 As strange as it may seem, frequently the reason for poor fishing in our fresh waters is too many fish. That is, the wrong kind of fish, with the most commonly too abundant species being the gizzard shad. Also occuring at times in. Large enough quantities to be a problem is the smaller relative of the gizzard shad, the threadfin shad. To a statement such as has been made above, the answer is usually given, how can you have too many fish? Well, it must be remembered that a body of water is capable of producing only a given amount of fish. This total production of the fish population is different for various bodies of water and is dependent upon the amount of basic nutrients which the body of water has available, indirectly, for the fish population. Therefore it follows that if a body of water can only produce so many fish and the more of these fish that are rough or trash fish then the smaller the amount of desirable fish which may be produced. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: December, 1958 The use of rotenone in this type work is preferred since this chemical has the desirable effects of being toxic to fish while in the same quantities it is harm less to warm blooded animals such as pets, livestock and humans. In addition rotenone is also desirable in that it's time period of effectiveness is limited and water treated with it may in a short time be restocked even when rotenone had been applied in quantities sufficient to kill all fish present. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 9: July-August, 1957 In the last five or six years, the trend has been to smaller bass lures. With their advent came longer and lighter casting rods that would enable the fisherman to cast these smaller lightweight lures. The reels have also been modified so that they are lighter. In place of heavy brass or steel gears, they are now being made of nylon. In place of the conventional wide spool, what was once considered a tournament reel is now standard equipment in most places. The narrow spools provide more speed in casting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: March 1958 Although the general physical condition of the deer in regards to body fat was good, gross field examinations of about 10% of the stomachs revealed an absence of any browse, but instead agricultural crops and weeds of agriculture comprised the only identifiable foods. Two visits into the woods failed to reveal much deer sign away from the fields and there was no evidence of recent deer use of wood browse species. The forested portion of the problem area is virtually stripped of its ability to support deer and the continued over-browsing has begun to seriously effect the species composition and timber reproduction of the forest both from a commercial timber reproduction and a deer welfare standpoint. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: July-August, 1958 Childhood is the age of magic. Each day is a new world. Each object of nature is a marvel. If we will only permit it, we can live our childhood all over again by sharing their discoveries. But -we must be willing to stop and listen and look. Come when they call us to look at the sunset. Show our appreciation for a bouquet of wilted wildflowers. Help patch up a broken wing. Watch a spider spinning its web. Instead of shuddering over a Wiggly worm or a dusty toad, instead of making a fuss or, worse yet, ignoring them, we should make every effort to have a share in their proud moment of discovery. To children every firefly might be Tinker Bell, every cocoon might well be Sleeping Beauty, every butterfly, a fairy queen. Mice might change into Cinderella's prancing steeds. Stars might be diamonds. Rainbows might even be over a pot of gold. The child's world is the realm of Nature. His favorite stories and poems and songs are always about the birds and the beasts and the flowers and the trees. There is a lot of talk about juvenile delinquency and of parents not being able to understand why their teen-agers have shut them out of their world, but maybe, sometime in the formative years, a mother and a father slammed the door themselves. The door that closed when a mother couldn't understand why a boy had to have a certain puppy. The door that closed when nobody had time to go on a picnic.
