In Looking Beyond the Structure, architect Dan Bucsescu and philosopher Michael Eng record their conversations about the relationship of the built environment and other forms of design to the culture in which they are created. The authors exchange their interpretations of selected readings about design theory and invite the reader to join in the discussion. Questions following each chapter's reading stimulate critical thinking about the philosophies and theories of design, and additional assignments encourage students to express their critical thinking skills visually.

In today's digital age, visual representation plays a significant role in shaping our world. This book explores the topic of visual research methods and their relevance to education. It highlights the use of visual media, such as images and videos, to enhance our understanding of complex concepts and phenomena. By integrating visual research into education, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of abstract ideas, leading to better retention and application of knowledge. Additionally, visual research methods provide multiple perspectives on social phenomena, motivating us to initiate social change. The book features contributions from scholars worldwide, who discuss various methodological perspectives and applications of visual research in education. Topics include visual inquiry methodology, techniques for analyzing visual data, and the use of photovoice. Each chapter reviews the literature on a specific visual method, addresses methodological challenges, strengths, and limitations, and explores its contributions to education research. Overall, this book offers valuable insights into the power and potential of visual research methods in education, providing a platform for scholars to share their expertise and promote the use of visual methods in educational research. The liner shipping industry has seen many changes in the past decade. Economic and environmental factors have contributed to the construction and deployment of everlarger ships. As a result, overcapacities have developed on the primary trade routes, which forced shipping operators to redeploy previously used ships on secondary trade routes. This redeployment is defined as cascading and affects all stakeholders in the liner shipping industry. This thesis aims to examine these cascading effects on services that connected the West Coast of South America with the Far East and Europe in the past decade. Hence, a particular focus was placed on services that call either at the Peruvian ports of Callao or Paita. Currently, available literature examines cascading effects with respect to ship sizes. However, this thesis argues that more dimensions should be explored. For the empirical analysis, historical scheduled transit data was collected. Furthermore, global trade routes were identified and classified based on their monthly trade volume. To identify possible dimensions of cascading, a ship-specific database was created. The results determine an increase in all ship-specific physical dimensions and improved connectivity to Asia, while the connectivity to Europe decreased. Additionally, more ships with environmental equipment, such as Scrubber instalments, cascaded to the analysed services in the past decade. The findings are used to suggest managerial implications for ports and shippers. Moreover, the limitations of this thesis are stated, as well as implications for future research.

Beyond the Looking Glass is the story of a young boy who dared to venture outside the boundaries of his small world by stepping through a looking glass that promised not only escape from his rural surroundings, but adventure beyond his limited horizon. Unlike Alice who found a Wonderland when she passed through her looking glass, the author found looking glasses at each turn in the road; mirrors that did not reflect the wonders that lay beyond or the Mad-Hatter characters he was to encounter along the way. Beyond the Looking Glass provides an unique tale of the author's journey through the Rite of Passage toward manhood during the difficult times so many suffered from the Great Depression and World War II. The reader experiences the author's immaturity, then his gradual maturation, as he overcomes many obstacles in his quest to join the navy. At the age of sixteen he succeeds in his quest and spends the war years in the Pacific Theater where he participates in the Saipan and Guam amphibious landings and later the re-taking of the Philippine Islands where his aircraft carrier suffers a kamikase attack. At age fourteen, Bob Quinn's travels begin with the encounter of his first looking glass; a slow moving freight train....
