The story tries to tell about the coming of the Christ Child the way a small Jewish boy of Jesus' time would have seen it. It tries to show how very much and why he would have been waiting for it. It reminds us how he would have been surprised to see the great Prince Messiah, the Lord Christ, as a baby in the place where he put food each day for the domestic animals. By and large the people of Jesus' day expected the Messiah, or the Lord Christ, to come with kingly power and glory. His coming as their humble brother went against all they had expected. God's ways are so different from ours. - Last page.

The character of the book is Benjamin, who lived in the New Testament town of Capernaum, which was on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. He is a young man who was chosen by his family to register them in the emperor's census that is described in the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. He has one goal in mind: to get to Bethlehem, register the family in the census book, and get right back to his home and work in the family's busy fish market. He unintentionally gets involved in the events immediately surrounding the birth of Jesus but is clueless about what is happening in the stable outside his window during that wondrous night. His focus is on sleep and getting back home the next day and therefore becomes The Man Who Missed the First Christmas. He is an example of so many people today who are sadly clueless to the miracle of that first Christmas and what it means to millions of Christians.
