Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality. The earlier in life dyslipidemia is treated, the better the prognosis. The current book is an excellent one on dyslipidemia written by experts on this topic. This book includes 12 chapters including 5 on lipids, 4 on hypercholesterolemia in children, and 3 on the treatment of dyslipidemia. This book should be read by all health care professionals taking care of patients, including pediatricians since atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease begins in childhood.

Abstract: Proceedings of a 1980 international symposium on nutrition, lipids, and cardiovascular disease research are presented for health professionals. Fundamental research andhuman studies are integrated, with the first pilot epidemiological project between research institutions from the US, Italy, and Finland. Twenty research papers are presented in 5 areas: metabolism of essential fatty acids; current membrane lipid research; platelets and cardiovascular diseases; the effect of dietary composition on health and disease; and nutrition and risk factors in cardiovascular diseases. The interrelationship between various fields of biomedicine are stressed to enhance understanding of cardiovascular disease prevention. (wz).

This book correlates different minerals and lipids serum profiles with the prevalence of cardiovascular disorders in South Asian countries with special emphasis on Pakistan. Cardiovascular disorders (CVD, e.g. coronary heart diseases, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease, angina, heart failure and deep vein thrombosis) show significantly increasing rates in South Asian countries like Pakistan and have become a major health problem. Nevertheless, the data on any aspect of cardiovascular problems still is scanty. The serum profiles of different minerals (copper, magnesium, zinc, selenium) and lipids are analyzed in detail. The presented data will thus lead to a better understanding of the problem and help to provide possible solutions, which can be achieved, e.g. through ameliorated minerals profiles in the daily diet. These results can help develop better dietary management strategies in the prevention and treatment of CVD.

That a relation exists between lipids/lipoproteins and coronary artery disease is no longer an arguable point. However, the complexities associated with this relationship, and the number of factors that can impact and alter circumstances and clinical status, are many and diverse. Consequently, this relationship continues to receive a great deal of

An essential resource for all cardiologists, internists, and medical residents, Pharmacological Management of Hypertension and Dyslipidemia assists clinicians in the treatment of hypertension and high cholesterol, the two most easily diagnosed and treatable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This concise yet complete handbook includes the scientific background for each drug class presented, and includes a review of the science supporting the utilization of the agents in particular patient situations. The medications and their doses and dosage forms are presented in easy to use tables, so that the practitioners can quickly access the information to make their treatment decisions, whether they are in the hospital or in an outpatient setting.

New discoveries in genetics, molecular, and cell biology are not only enhancing our understanding of the etiology and progression of disease, but are finding applications in the development of new drugs or the implementation of new kinds of therapy. This book provides an in-depth review of emerging areas in biomedical research at the interface of s

Lipids and Women's Health is an up-to-date critical review of pertinent scientific and clinical issues connected with lipid disorders in women. Topics discussed include the public health significance of cardiovascular disease in women, lipoprotein and lipid metabolism, effects of estrogens and progestins on lipid metabolism, metabolic changes of menopause, and the paradox of obesity, a curable disease that is rarely cured, as well as those conceptual advances in our understanding of diabetes mellitus that have clarified diagnosis and may have improved treatment. The relationship of diet and lipid intake to the development of breast and uterine cancer; dietary and drug treatment of lipid disorders; effects of exercise, smoking, and stress; and repercussions of lipid disorders on the family are explored. The volume should prove of use to gynecologists, internists, family practitioners, and pediatricians, as well as to all other professionals with a major concern for the health of female patients.
