Excerpt from Life Under Two Flags This is a book of reminiscences which are cast in varied areas, quiet and stormy, at home and abroad, and through which runs the evidence of a serene and undisturbed productiveness. Rich and interesting indeed is any life which has known such wide skies and abundant ingathering. Born of a great inheritance which he shared with noble brothers, enriched by the life-long love of a courageous woman, the writer tells with the cheerfulness of youth the story of the strangely diverse experiences through which many years have borne him. In these days when the seas are strewn with wreckage, it is good to hear of ships which are brought home so richly laden. But the book is more than a volume of reminiscences. Nor is it merely a vindication of the promises past and present. It is the record of lives spent in a particular form of service. Under Two Flags tells the story of an English aristocrat, apparently in disgrace, who disappears and joins a French battalion in Algeria, loosely based on the Foreign Legion. The novel is about The Hon. Bertie Cecil (nicknamed Beauty of the Brigades). In financial distress because of his own profligacy and the loss of an important horse-race on which he has bet extensively, and falsely accused of forgery, but unable to defend himself against the charge without injuring the "honour" of a lady and also exposing his younger brother, Cecil fakes his own death and exiles himself to Algeria where he joins the Chasseurs d'Afrique, a regiment comprising soldiers from various countries, rather like the French Foreign Legion.

Focusing on everyday life in nineteenth-century Britain and its imperial possessions”from preparing tea to cleaning the kitchen, from packing for imperial adventures to arranging home décor”the essays in this collection share a common focus on materiality, the nitty-gritty elements that helped give shape and meaning to British self-definition during the period. Each essay demonstrates how preoccupations with common household goods and habits fueled contemporary debates about cultural institutions ranging from personal matters of marriage and family to more overtly political issues of empire building. While existing scholarship on material culture in the nineteenth century has centered on artifacts in museums and galleries, this collection brings together disparate fields”history of design, landscape history, childhood studies, and feminist and postcolonial literary studies”to focus on ordinary objects and practices, with specific attention to how Britons of all classes established the tenets of domesticity as central to individual happiness, national security, and imperial hegemony.

Excerpt from Under Two Flags, Vol. 2: A Story of the Household and the Desert Ouf! Said the Friend of the Flag with more expression in that single ejaculation than could be put in a volume. He does woman's deeds, does he? He has woman's hands, but they can fight, I fancy? Six Arabs to his own sword the other day in that skirmish! Superb! Excerpt from Under Two Flags, Vol. 1 of 3: A Story of the Household and the Desert The appellative, gained at Eton, was in no way un deserved. When the smoke cleared away that Was circling round him out of a great meerschaum-bowl, it showed a face of as much delicacy and brilliancy as a woman's, handsome, thorough-bred, languid, non chalant, with a certain latent recklessness under the impassive calm of habit, and a singular softness given to the large dark hazel eyes by the unusual length of the lashes over them. His features were exceedingly fair - fair as the fairest girl's; his hair was of the softest, silkiest, brightest chesnut; his mouth very beautifully shaped; on the whole, with a certain gentle, mournful love-me look that his eyes had with them, it was no wonder that great ladies and gay lionnes alike gave him the palm as the handsomest man In all the Household Regiments - not even ex cepting that splendid golden-haired Colossus, his oldest friend and closest comrade, known as the Seraph.
