Excerpt from Life and Writings of Alfred Lord Tennyson Among our poets Alfred Lord Tennyson occupies a conspicuous place. From 1842 to 1892 he was the most well-known poet of England, and he had not, like many a poet, to wait till near the end of his life to receive his just reward of fame; for, from his thirty-third year onward, he continued to hold the position of representative poet of his country in the same way as Verdi was the representative master of music in Italy during the same period. The Laureateship bestowed upon him in 1850 was only the public recognition of the dominion he had already acquired among his countrymen. Such a career is a phenomenon in our literary history worthy of being considered from time to time, because the further Tennyson recedes from us the reasons of his supremacy will become more apparent. Excerpt from Alfred Lord Tennyson a Study of His Life and Work This volume was completed, all but the last page of biography, when the sudden illness of Lord Tennyson startled me at the task of minute revision, which I had hoped might long be my pleasant occupation. Such as it is, the book has been my companion during the last two years, and grew into shape as the natural result of a love for the poetry, and a desire to possess in convenient shape all that could be recorded of the life of one whom I regarded with sincere enthusiasm. In process of time, no doubt, a life of Lord Tennyson will be written, based upon material which at the present moment is in the possession of the family. The present volume does not pretend to be the official life of the late Poet Laureate, and expressly deprecates the supposition that it is built upon any but public data; nevertheless it will not be found to be altogether devoid of novelty. Perhaps I may claim to have searched more patiently and widely than any of my predecessors for every available record; and I certainly have left no important source of likely information untested. For the greater part of his active career tennyson was his own severest editor, can celling and emending, so that as edition followed edition, the final versions of many poems differed in many details from the versions originally published. Excerpt from Alfred, Lord Tennyson: Poet Laureate; A Brief Study of His Life and Poetry This little book is mainly occupied with Lord Tennyson as a great moral and religious teacher. It has been my wish to provide a short introduction to his poems that are concerned with the highest spiritual problems. I have put together whatever interesting facts I could gather regarding his life and surroundings that help us to understand the man and his teaching. In setting before myself this aim, I have not forgotten that Tennyson was a great poet rather than a philosopher or theologian, and that we do him a certain injustice in attempting to consider the substance of his message apart from its poetic form. But it must be borne in mind that although a poet, his chief vocation was not to delight or amuse. No philosopher or theologian has been so widely recognised as the teacher and prophet of his age as Tennyson. For those who cared to know about his literary history he wrote Merlin and the Gleam. From his boyhood he had felt the magic of Merlin - that spirit of poetry - which bade him know his power and follow throughout his work a pure and high ideal, with a simple and single devotedness and a desire to ennoble the life of the world, and Which helped him through doubts and difficulties to endure as seeing Him who is invisible.
