This letter is dated 10 October 1799, is addressed to Sir H. Popham, and accompanied the writer's letter to Count Rastopsin and the reply, which are no longer with this letter, as well as giving an account of the writer's efforts to assess the fallout and redress the difficulties arising from the 'distastrous event of the 19th Sept' (presumably the Russian and British defeat by the French and Dutch at the Battle of Bergen). According to the Autograph Collection card catalogue, this item is one of twenty letters from Charles Whitworth, 1st Earl Whitworth, to Sir Home Riggs Popham, all previously given the collection number (accession number) M5142.
