This is a letter from Charles Dougherty to George R. Gilmer, Governor of Georgia (1829-1831, 1837-1839), dated October 24, 1839 at Athens, Georgia. Dougherty was a member of the counsel representing the state of Georgia in legal proceedings in Habersham County in which unnamed Cherokee plaintiffs (and/or their descendents) filed claims regarding the occupation of their reservations by citizens of Habersham County. Dougherty reports that he was successful in having the claims dismissed on the grounds that the documentation provided by the Cherokee plaintiffs was insufficient to demonstrate title to the lands. He suspects that the cases will not be renewed.

This is a letter dated April 29, 1836 from Wilson Lumpkin in Athens, Georgia, to Governor William Schley (Governor of Georgia, 1835-1837) in Milledgeville. Wilson calls Schley's attention to the case of Joseph Espey, who received a receipt for money owed to claimants under the provisions of the Treaty of Indian Springs (probably the second Treaty of Indian Springs, February 12, 1825, concluded between a faction of Creek Indians and U.S. commissioners). Lumpkin says that the money had already been paid to the heirs of Espey's father, Thomas, and that Joseph Espey pointed out this error and agreed to send the incorrect receipt back to the governor. Lumpkin asks the governor to send Espey a corrected receipt showing that the claim had already been paid, and he refers Schley to (Alfred?) Cuthbert should he have any further questions about the case.
