Excerpt from Lectures on Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics, Vol. 2: A Handbook for Students and Practitioners Gentlemen, - Somewhat earlier on in my lectures, when speaking of traumatic inflammation, I stated it did not usually extend beyond the limits of the injury, and that if this sometimes appeared to be the case, it was due to the fact that we had overlooked the extent of the injury. I strongly maintain the truth of this remark. We have, however, added that very severe and progressive inflammation with sloughing may take place as the result of accidents (such as contused wounds) either immediately after the injury, or that secondary inflammations may develop even in wounds which are granulating, from causes which we also discussed. I must now point out to you that there is still another class of peculiar inflammatory and gangrenous processes, which attack wounds and lead to severe and, for the most part, pyrexial constitutional diseases. These latter may even come on without any appreciable change in the condition of the wound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from General Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics, in Fifty-One Lectures: A Text-Book for Students and Physicians The steady advance of science, and the progress that we our selves make as long as we have the inclination and strength to swim with the stream, become most apparent when we are from time to time obliged to go over our old work. On a similar occasion I have already expressed this thought, but do not hesi tate to repeat it here; for this perception of progress is a great support to us in the many dark hours when, with the greatest zeal to serve our fellow-men, we feel oppressed by the impotence of our knowledge and ability. Excerpt from General Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics, in Fifty Lectures: A Text-Book for Students and Physicians The book might perhaps have been entitled Principles of Surgery, but this would hardly have indicated the specific man ner in which these principles have been inculcated. Most of the views found in these lectures have been floating through the journals for several years past; but, so far as the translator knows, they are not so fully presented in any book in the English language. The only work in our language on the subject was published many years ago; even the late editions are but little changed from the first moreover; the two works are, in most respects, entirely unlike. The fact of this publication going through four editions in Germany, and having been translated into French, Italian, Rus sian, and Hungarian, should be some guarantee for its standing. Excerpt from Lectures on Surgical Pathology, Vol. 2: Delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons of England; Tumours Herein we seem to discern an essential difference be tween the overgrowths of tumours, and those accomplished by any exercise of the normal power of nutrition in a part. This power, capable of augmented exercise in any emergency, is yet not a mere capacity of production; neither is it dependent upon circumstances for the fashion of its products; identical with that which effected the development of the germ, it is equally bound to conformity with the proper type of the part or species in which it is exercised.
