Excerpt from Lead Refining by Electrolysis The electrolytic refining of lead bullion has now become an established metallurgical process, with further extensions confidently expected to come from time to time. Lead is almost an ideal metal to refine electrolytically, because its electrochemical equivalent is very high, and hence the power cost is small, and the depositing tanks are relatively smaller or fewer than for other common metals. Its casting into anodes is especially easy, and it stands high enough in the electrochemical scale to leave its impurities almost entirely in the anode slime, as metals, so there is no appreciable contamination of the electrolyte. The contained information is the result of a number of years of study, experiment and practical work, and is published in the hope that it will save those who may be interested in lead refining practice or its improvement the repetition of experiments already performed, and give them the benefit of the work already done by others and myself. Some space has been devoted to theoretical discussions of conductivity of electrolyte, etc., which I thought would be useful and instructive. The variety of methods of slime treatment which are discussed in Chapter II, may seem unnecessarily large from the practical standpoint, though I myself believe it is desirable to treat them at the length I have. Excerpt from Lead Smelting and Refining: With Some Notes on Lead Mining This book is a reprint of various articles pertaining especially to the smelting and refining of lead, together with a few articles relating to the mining of lead ore, which have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal, chie y during the last three years; in a few cases articles from earlier issues have been inserted, in view of their special importance in rounding out certain of the subjects treated. For the same reason, several articles from the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have been incorporated, permission to republish them in this way having been courteously granted by the Secretary of the Institute. Certain of the other articles comprised in this book are abstracts of papers originally presented before engineering societies, or published in other technical periodicals, subsequently republished in the Engineering and Mining Journal, as to which proper acknowledgment has been made in all cases. Excerpt from Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead The last 15 or 20 years have seen great changes in the lead smelting industry of the United States. As transportation has improved, small and poorly equipped smelters which had been built near the deposits of ore have been abandoned and the tendency has been to concentrate the work of smelting and refining in a few large plants, for it has proved cheaper to ship the ore to large centers where labor is abundant, than to do the smelting in the mining districts. This change has resulted in a twofold advantage to the worker. In the first place, as these large plants are usually equipped with the latest and best machinery the amount of handwork required has been materially diminished. In the second place, the conditions under which the employees work have been improved, for large, well-built factories are usually freer from dust and fumes than are those of the old type, and newer methods of manufacture involve economies, such as the saving of poisonous volatile products which used to be allowed to escape into the air. Along with the improvement in equipment, there has been in recent years evidence of a greater interest on the part of the managers in the health and safety of their workmen, and there is probably now no plant in the United States in which some effort is not made to lessen the dangers of lead poisoning as well as to prevent accidents. As a result of these changes in most places where lead smelting is an old industry, as in southeastern Missouri, Pueblo, Denver, Leadville, East Helena, Omaha, and South Chicago, the opinion is general among physicians and townspeople, as well as among the men in the industry, that lead poisoning is far less frequent and less severe than it used to be.
