Adam Smith saw self-interest as the driving motivation of human affairs. Lux traces the failure of societies based on self-interest, from the misery of Charles Dicken's England, through the Great Depression, to the culture of narcissism of the past decade. He shows how Smith, and the economists who followed him, made a fundamental mistake: self-interest by itself leads to social strife, ecological damage, and the abuse of power. By recognizing Smith's mistake, we as a society can move forward to a time when benevalence rather than greed becomes the economic motivation of our society.

Adam Smith, with his book The Wealth of Nations, in the late 18th century was one of the founders of economics as a discipline. His central theory concentrates on the value he places on self interest, arguing that it is not from the benevolence of others that we receive what we need but out of their regard for their own self interest. When each person pursues his or her own self-interest, society as a whole is led to a condition of benefit for all.

For a long time, the work of the 8th Earl of Lauderdale, James Maitland, was badly neglected. It has only been in this century that his contribution to economic thought has been reassessed and revalued. Since then he has come to be recognized as the earliest systematic critic of Smith's economic thought. This revaluation continues now with the publication of Lauderdale's Notes on Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. The work, the existence of which was only discovered five years ago, is published here for the first time. It is reproduced from the hand-written notes and marginalia which appear in Lauderdale's own edition of the Wealth of Nations which in now housed in the Tokyo Keizai University Library. The notes are reproduced here in full along with the relevant passages from The Wealth of Nations to which they refer.

Adam Smith, who has towered over economics for more than two hundred years, was not alone in Scotland in creating systems of analysis which would explain how economies function and prosper. Writers of various backgrounds – there being no such profession as 'economist' – who were inspired by issues of the day as well as by the writings of Smith and other Scots, made significant contributions to the development of economic theory and policy that are often overlooked today. In the Shadow of Adam Smith, a landmark work in the history of economic thought, surveys and integrates the ideas of eighty Scottish writers from the 18th and 19th centuries to reveal a startlingly rich tapestry of argument and debate on a wide variety of economic subjects, both philosophical and practical, that remain highly pertinent today. Government debt, economic growth, banking, credit, taxation – all were tackled by this remarkable, diverse collection of writers. Through reading their contributions to economics we both understand modern economic issues and thought more deeply, and gain a richer understanding of Adam Smith's thought and inheritance. Written in a crisp and readable style with a minimum of technical detail, this is an ideal book for students of the history of economics, as well as academics and general readers.

Adam Smith’s contribution to economics is well-recognised but in recent years scholars have been exploring anew the multidisciplinary nature of his works. The Adam Smith Review is a refereed annual review that provides a unique forum for interdisciplinary debate on all aspects of Adam Smith’s works, his place in history, and the significance of his writings to the modern world. It is aimed at facilitating debate between scholars working across the humanities and social sciences, thus emulating the reach of the Enlightenment world which Smith helped to shape. The seventh volume of the series contains contributions from specialists across a range of disciplines, including Christopher Berry, Maureen Harkin, Edith Kuiper, N.B. Leddy, Catriona Seth, Henry C. Clarke, Deidre Dawson, Dionysios Drosos, Ioannis A.Tassopoulos, Jeremy Jennings, Ryan Patrick Hanley, Fotini Vaki, Spiros Tegos, Nicholas J.
