Conceived in gold lust and born in the middle of nowhere on a cold autumn day, Denver grew up on mining booms and busts. Building their city rapidly and recklessly, Denverites tore down 'old-fashioned buildings' to construct their own grand new monuments. Not until the 1960s did the people of Denver, alarmed by wholesale urban-renewal demolitions and a new building boom, convince the mayor and city council to form the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission to identify and preserve the most important landmarks. To date, more than 250 landmarks and 28 historic districts have been preserved. Denver Landmarks and Historic Districts is the only volume of its kind to celebrate Denver's finest antique homes, churches, clubs, saloons, hotels, libraries, schools, restaurants, and banks -- many of which are open to the public. Here is the story of the Daniels and Fisher Tower, Elitch's Theatre, Denver's best city parks, the Denver Press Club, the Denver Athletic Club, notorious houses of ill repute, a tiny Five Points black mortuary that became a Hispanic pool hall, and much more. A brief history of Denver introduces readers to building types, materials, and styles and architects, showing how buildings reflect various ethnic and economic groups. An overview of the preservation movement covers the history of the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission and local preservation battles.

Palm Beach is a remarkably small town to be so famous; its population is only a little over 10,000. Nor is it an old town: the oldest extant building dates from about 1885, and the town itself was not incorporated until after 1900. What has granted Palm Beach its fame is the same combination of elements that made Bath famous in the 18th century: a very few clear-sighted men—they can be counted on the fingers of one hand, wealthy families attracted to what these men had to offer, and some remarkable architecture built when wealth and vision intermingled. This book records that architecture. The contents are strategically arranged, so that the visitor can drive or walk the area and see the buildings sequence of location. Within this compendium of photographs and descriptive text, you will find more than 150 Palm Beach buildings written and photographed by a resident active in historic preservation. The book does not attempt to evaluate, but rather to exhibit the richness and diversity of this extraordinary place. The work of famous architects is featured, notably that of Addison Mizner, Marion Wyeth, Maurice Fatio, Howard Major, John Volk and the designer Joseph Urban. Also covered are the famous Breakers Hotel, the Bath and Tennis Club, the Everglades Club, and the shops of Worth Avenue.

The Industrial Revolution, along with free land, created fierce competition among American railroad companies to connect the country with a web of track. Goods, as well as people, needed to be transported. The railroads would create towns, then profit from the sale of the land and transporting of people and goods. The plan worked brilliantly, as there were no other means of transportation--or roads--to these new communities. Aberdeen, platted in 1881, was known as an "end of line" stop for several years. During this time, the town boomed into a city. Main Street sprawled southward, and wooden boomtown businesses were quickly replaced with elaborate brick buildings, some six stories tall. Examples of Aberdeen's eclectic style of architecture, spanning nearly 60 years, can be found within Images of America: Aberdeen. Many of these treasures still exist today; others, along with their lost stories, are forever preserved here.
