Mary Augusta Ward CBE was a British novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs. Humphry Ward. She worked to improve education for the poor and she became the founding President of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. Ward began her career writing articles for Macmillan's Magazine while working on a book for children that was published in 1881 under the title Milly and Olly. This was followed in 1884 by a more ambitious, though slight, study of modern life, Miss Bretherton, the story of an actress. Ward's novels contained strong religious subject matter relevant to Victorian values she herself practiced. Her popularity spread beyond Great Britain to the United States.

Gwendolyn had dolls, riding lessons, toys, everything except love. She watched other children playing and wished she could join them. Then one day she became very ill, and in a wild delirium all the made-up monsters her nurses used to scare her with came into her dreams and she fought them one by one. In the end, she found her way to claim the love of a father and a mother who had neglected her for their own concerns.

One day she happens upon the young man in the adjoining room contemplating suicide, and saves his life, which he never forgets: 'I did not know her name until you told me just now; I saw her for only a few minutes; those few minutes, and her angelic goodness, changed the whole current of my life.'
