Gold is extracted with dibutyl 'Carbitol' and determined by an atomic-absorption method. The platinum-group metals in the aqueous phase are freed from traces of organic reagent by oxidation with perchloric acid, then converted to the chlorocomplexes and taken into solution with hydrochloric acid. Platinum and palladium are separated from rhodium and iridium by their conversion to the iodide complexes and subsequent extraction with 15 per cent tri-n-butyl ortho-phosphate in hexane, rhodium and iridium being left in the aqueous phase (a). Platinum and palladium are recovered by back-extraction with concentrated nitric acid after which the palladium is complexed with p-nitrosodimethylaniline and the absorption measured. The complex is then extracted with chloroform, leaving the platinum in the aqueous phase (b), in which it is determined. Rhodium and iridium left in aqueous phase (a) are converted to the chlorocomplexes after any iodides have been removed. Iridium is extracted with 1:1 tri-n-butyl ortho-phosphate in hexane in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Rhodium is determined in the aqueous phase, and iridium is recovered from the organic phase by back-extraction with 1:9 hydrobromic acid. When the four platinum-group metals have been separated, they are determined spectrophotometrically.

The sample is mixed with a flux consisting of borax, sodium carbonate, silica, lead oxide, and maize meal. During the fusion procedure, the maize meal reduces the lead oxide to metallic lead, which falls to the bottom of the crucible, carrying the noble metals with it. The molten lead and slag are transferred to an iron mould and allowed to solidify. The lead is separated from the slag and cupelled at 960 degrees C. During this procedure, the lead is absorbed by the material of the cupel, and a prill containing the noble metals is left on the surface of the cupel. After this first cupellation, the prill either is cleaned, weighed, and analysed for the individual platinum-group metals and for gold, or is subjected to a high temperature cupellation (1300 degrees C) for the removal of silver and residual lead. This prill, containing only the platinum group metals and gold, is cleaned and weighed, to give a close assessment of the total content of the platinum-group metals and gold.

Gold in prills obtained by the lead-collection technique is determined after the prills have been dissolved in aqua regia and the gold has been extracted from the resulting solutions with dibutyl 'Carbitol'. The extraction is carried out from solutions in which the concentration of hydrochloric acid is not less than 4 molar. The extracted gold is diluted to volume with ethanol and is then determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry.

By this laboratory method, the noble metals are separated from one another as the solution containing them passes through a glass column of Porasil C that has adsorbed tri-n-butyl phosphate, different mineral acids being used as eluents. Rhodium and platinum are determined photometrically with tin (II) chloride solutions, and palladium and iridium are determined colorimetrically - palladium with thioglycollic acid, and iridium with leuco-crystal violet. The gold is determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. The method is applicable to the noble metals present in cupellations prills, in hydrochloric acid solutions obtained from the dissolution of tin and nickel sulphide buttons, and in acid extracts of ores and concentrates. Osmium and ruthenium, if present, are volatilized, in the presence of an oxidizing agent, during the dissolution step with aqua regia, and are not determined by this method.
