In these days of sensationalism, the images of the past often seem shadowy and rather vague. This work explores a period in American art and culture when both were infused with a strong sense of righteousness and the certainty that the artist must celebrate nature and the deity. The chapter headings--from "Seeing" to "Virtue," "Chivalry" to "Christendom"--echo the ideas expressed in the paintings, contrasting with what art critic Cooper sees as a cultural crisis in our times. Unfortunately, this work comes across as preachy and sentimental, perhaps because of the zealous morality of the time it examines. Still, the works of art, gathered from a wide variety of holdings, are an excellent record of a splendid age of landscape, and Cooper should be commended for preserving and evaluating these important records of a past era. One could only wish that the sense of moral judgment did not overwhelm the critical eye. Recommended for academic libraries and all libraries focusing on American art history. 58 colour & 2 b/w illustrations

Long ago, an evil wizard sold his soul to the devil in exchange for supreme power. He betrayed and murdered his fellow wizards as he built an army of half-demon, half-animal overlords that marched against the forces of Videnland. The Knights of Videnland rode against this evil, along with the last remaining great wizards of their time. The forces of good exiled the evil wizard to another dimension and were victorious. This campaign became legendary, as did the heroes of that time. Now, many years later, the war has been all but forgotten. All that remains are the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. However, the evil wizard that once threatened the land has found a way out of his prison. Renewing his war upon the realm, all that stands in his way are an old wizard and three young warriors who are destined to become legends themselves. The times ahead will determine the fate of each of these young men, who find themselves championing the fight against evil and are thrown in the middle of an epic conflict. Non-stop battle keep the action in high gear, including an amphibious assault on the Elven kingdom, a dragon-led siege on the Dwarven stronghold, and demon gladiators fighting to the death.

When Morgan McRobbie rescues a damsel-in-distress from a dragon, he expects she’ll swoon, murmuring “My hero!” Instead, Marissa has only loathing for the man everyone believes will betray Kilbourne. That’s fine with Morgan. A woman in his life would just complicate things. A high-level informer threatens the kingdom’s security, and Morgan is out to stop him. Posing as a turncoat himself, he’s walking a fine line between honor and betrayal. A single misstep could result in disaster, and his mission is fraught with distractions: the pesky dragon, a pair of conniving courtiers, and the disillusioned damsel who’s certain Morgan can’t be trusted. If Morgan’s going to save the kingdom, win the girl, and manage to stay alive, he’ll need to step up his game. Because the traitor is lurking in the shadows, and his scheme calls not just for the betrayal of Kilbourne, but also the destruction of Morgan McRobbie.
