Free surface flows arise in the natural world, physical and biological sciences and in some areas of modern technology and engineering. Exam ples include the breaking of sea waves on a harbour wall, the transport of sloshing fluids in partly filled containers, and the design of micronozzles for high speed ink-jet printing. Apart from the intrinsic mathematical challenge in describing and solving the governing equations, there are usually important environmental, safety and engineering features which need to be analysed and controlled. A rich variety of techniques has been developed over the past two decades to facilitate this analysis; singular perturbations, dynamical systems, and the development of sophisticated numerical codes. The extreme and sometimes violent nature of some free surface flows taxes these methods to the limit. The work presented at the symposium addressed these limits and can be loosely classified into four areas: (i) Axisymmetric free surface flows. There are a variety of problems in the printing, glass, fertiliser and fine chemical industries in which threads of fluid are made and controlled. Presentations were made in the areas of pinch-off for inviscid and viscous threads of fluid, recoil effects after droplet formation and the control of instability by forced vibration. (ii) Dynamic wetting. The motion of three phase contact lines, which are formed at the junction between two fluids and a solid, plays an important role in fluid mechanics.

by the author to the English edition The book aims to present a powerful new tool of computational mechanics, complex variable boundary integral equations (CV-BIE). The book is conceived as a continuation of the classical monograph by N. I. Muskhelishvili into the computer era. Two years have passed since the Russian edition of the present book. We have seen growing interest in numerical simulation of media with internal structure, and have evidence of the potential of the new methods. The evidence was especially clear in problems relating to multiple grains, blocks, cracks, inclusions and voids. This prompted me, when preparing the English edition, to place more emphasis on such topics. The other change was inspired by Professor Graham Gladwell. It was he who urged me to abridge the chain of formulae and to increase the number of examples. Now the reader will find more examples showing the potential and advantages of the analysis. The first chapter of the book contains a simple exposition of the theory of real variable potentials, including the hypersingular potential and the hypersingular equations. This makes up for the absence of such exposition in current textbooks, and reveals important links between the real variable BIE and the complex variable counterparts. The chapter may also help readers who are learning or lecturing on the boundary element method.

The IUTAM Symposium on "Non-Linear Singularities in Defonnation and Flow" took place from March 17 to 21, 1997, at the Technion in Haifa, Israel, with 70 participants from 12 countries. The leitmotif of this Symposium brought together scientists working on singularity-dominated local fields in various branches of continuum mechanics, covering traditional solid and liquid behaviour as well as that of more complex non-linear materials; non-linearities arise either from the constitutive equations for the material or from the presence of interfaces or both. The scientific committee invited speakers who presented 34 papers in 12 sessions. Topics covered in the lectures included near tip fields of cracks, notches and wedges; flow around comers, wedges and cones; interfacial phenomena; moving contact lines in multiphase systems; cusps in fluid interfaces and shocks and localization. There was a general consensus among the participants that singularities induced by non-linearities provide a challenging and currently important area of research in mechanics, engineering and applied mathematics. Presentation and discussions during the symposium initiated further studies of problems in these interesting areas. This volume contains 30 full length papers, submitted by the lecturers after the symposium and reviewed to the standards of international scientific periodicals. New developments in the applications of fracture mechanics to engineering problems have taken place in the last years. Composite materials have extensively been used in engineering problems. Quasi-brittle materials including concrete, cement pastes, rock, soil, etc. all benefit from these developments. With the addition of the four new chapters the book presents a comprehensive treatment of fracture mechanics. It includes the basic principles and traditional applications as well as the new frontiers of research of fracture mechanics during the last three decades in topics of contemporary importance, like composites, thin films, nanoindentation and cementitious materials. It is an advantage in reading this book to have some understanding of the physics of cavitation. Therefore, this book is not an introductory text, but a book for more advanced study. However, this does not mean that this book is too difficult for a beginner, because it explains the cavitation phenomenon using many figures. Therefore, even a beginner on cavitation can read and can understand what cavitation is. If the student studies through this book (with patience), he or she can become an expert on the physics of cavitation.
