Rafe Khatchadorian is horrified that because of a missed science assignment he has to go to summer school; but instead of three weeks in a school room, he finds himself as a volunteer at BushyTail animal refuge, which is really hard, smelly work--and somehow he needs to use the experience (and the help of a girl he meets there) to produce a first-class science report.

Thematically, the protagonist of the book (a giraffe) feels rejected and isolated by the animals around them until they are brought to the realization that although the zoo is filled with different looking animals, they all share something in common. Research for this project included collecting data on themes and morals in contemporary children s books, and finding inspiration through them. Once the general concept was constructed, interviews were then conducted with a children s book author. With a target audience of four to five year olds, the book consists of easy-to-use words and colorful graphics that are accessible and appropriate to this age group. To represent the animals, photographs and illustrations were combined with a gradient to create a visual style that is both abstract and realistic. The goal of this project is to deliver a digestible moral to a young audience while incorporating the author s inspirations of the mystery of the animal kingdom and art.

A LIFE FILLED WITH RICHES The riches that mean most to Teresa “Toots” Loudenberry are the loving friends and family she’s accumulated over the course of a life well lived. And now that her daughter, Abby, has married her beau Chris and settled down near Toots in Charleston, life is even more satisfying than the delicious pralines sold at Toots’s bakery, The Sweetest Thing. Abby isn’t the only one enjoying a little romance. Toots’s friendship with Dr. Phil Becker has grown unexpectedly close . . . and that brings both joy and complications. As a distraction, Toots throws herself into helping Abby and Chris open an animal rescue shelter on their estate. But life takes a serious turn when two young children disappear after visiting The Sweetest Thing. Toots immediately enlists Ida, Sophie, and Mavis to help in the search. As they draw closer to the culprits, they realize the stakes are much higher than they ever could have imagined . . .
