In 1908, under orders to defend a tiny, isolated Pacific atoll from an improbable French invasion, Mexican captain Ramón Arnaud, his young bride, Alicia, and eleven soldiers and their families set sail for the so-called Isle of Passion. In this dire, forbidding place, a viable community is created under Ramón's guidance and inspired by Alicia's dedication. But they are soon forgotten by a motherland distracted by political upheaval and the first rumblings of World War I. Left to the mercies of nature and one another—falling victim one by one to disease, hunger, lust, despair, and, ultimately, violence—the castaways who remain must find strength in the courage and steadfast resourcefulness of Alicia Arnaud, upon whom their collective survival now depends. Based on true events, Laura Restrepo's Isle of Passion is a brilliantly rendered and dramatic tale of savage human nature—and one woman's determination to triumph over a harrowing fate.

"Ra'iavavae had been, indeed, an island of erotic splendour will all-encompassing religious and sexual rites. But the Western civilisation of the traders and missionaries wrought a gradual change in the social, economic and religious structure of the island until it became as it is today, a complacent society that rarely hints of its dramatic heritage."--Book jacket.

In the late nineteenth century, Mexico and France laid claim to Clipperton Island. In 1908 Mexico places a garrison of men and their families on the island to reinforce their claim. All goes well until 1914 when, because of the revolution that tears Mexico apart, the garrison is no longer supplied. Scurvy claims many of their lives and in a desperate attempt to save those that are left, the Captain tries to row a boat for help. He perishes along with three men he took with him. The lone man, left on the island, goes crazy and declares himself king. For twenty-two months he rapes, tortures and murders some of the women and children of the garrison. Finally, two of the women are successful in killing him. A United States warship, looking for Germans, rescues the survivors and returns them to Mexico and safety.

There’s always a price to pay for passion… Lies, infidelities, and loads of drama are what three couples—Brenda and Roselle Woods; LaQuandra and Isaiah Lewis; and Krista and Kendall Evans—are holding on to. Each partner is harboring their own sets of resentments and secrets that could destroy the very relationships they’ve professed to want. But each couple’s truths will either bring them closer together, or push them further apart…. Thousands of miles away from home, each couple will embark on a journey like no other. Surrounded by lush tropics, miles of sandy white beach, and emerald-blue waters lies a luxurious couples’ retreat tucked in the middle of the Pacific Ocean known as Passion Island. A privately owned, secluded paradise where couples struggling with emotional and physical intimacy are invited to spend six weeks working toward rekindling the passion in their troubled relationships, rediscovering the true meaning of love, or finally letting go. And, with the help of renowned sexologist Dr. Gretchen Dangerfield, each couple is pushed beyond their wildest imaginations. Sexual boundaries are challenged. Rules are broken. Truths are confronted. Commitments are questioned. Insecurities are exposed. Relationships are tested. And jealousies arise as each couple is forced to face their obsessions and their deepest, darkest desires. Featuring Cairo’s signature “style that is so raw and graphic” (Allison Hobbs), Passion Island is a gripping and hot exploration of love, sex, and relationships.
