Secord gives a dazzlingly detailed account of this scientific trench warfare and its social consequences. One ends up with a marvellous feeling for the major taxonomic enterprises in Darwin's younger day: mapping, ordering, conquering 'taming the chaos" of the strata. All of these of course had social and imperial ramifications; and Secord mentions geology's moral appeal (in supporting a divinely-stratified Creation) to a beleaguered elite intent on subduing the lower orders. Originally published in 1986. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Excerpt from Geology of Victoria: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Specimens in the Industrial and Technological Museum (Melbourne), Illustrating the Rock System of Victoria The descriptive catalogue of the specimens in the Industrial and Technological Museum, Which now appears, originally formed part of the Report of the Museum, presented to Parliament in 1874. It is' reprinted, With a View of making it more generally useful to the public. The collection of rocks native to Victoria Which the catalogue describes, affords a very good opportunity of studying the rock systems of the country. The greatest care has been observed With reference to the locality of each specimen, and a great number have been placed aside as comparatively useless, because their identity With a particular district could not, With certainty, be stated. In the catalogue will be found explanatory notes on the character of the various specimens, their modes of occurrence and affinities, rendering the collection still more useful, and the catalogue not merely a hand - book to this collection, but a guide that can be used With great advantage in the formation of other collee tions throughout the country. The foreign rocks and minerals, carefully classified in the.museum, also afford an opportunity of comparison With those of Victoria, Which must be interesting and valuable to all who are engaged in geological research. In his origi nal report to the Trustees, Mr. Ulrich states that the nomenclature, system, and basis of classification adopted are according to the most approved recent views on Lithology by Dr. Zirkel, of Leipzig, Dr. Senft, von Cotta, and other authorities on the subject, though following mainly those given by Dr. Zirkel in his work on Petrography. As all the collections of rock specimens in the Museum have been arranged according to this system, the identical species and varieties of rocks of these collections can easily be compared. The geological notes introductory to the several main divisions and groups of rocks, are partly from Mr. Ulrich's own obser vations in the field, and partly extracts from the reports of Mr. A. R. C. Selwyn, the Director of the former Geological Survey of Victoria. The numbers of this catalogue agree with those on the descriptive labels attached to the specimens.
