For more than 50 years, silicon has dominated the electronics industry. However, this growth will come to an end, due to resources limitations. Thus, research developments need to focus to alternative materials, with higher performance and better functionality. Current research achievements have indicated that carbon is one of the promising candidates for its exploitation in the electronics industry. Whereas the physical properties of graphite and diamond have been investigated for many years, the potential for electronic applications of other allotropes of carbon (fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibres, carbon films, carbon balls and beads, carbon fibers, etc), has only been appreciated relatively recently. Carbon-based materials offer a number of exciting possibilities for new applications of electronic devices, due to their unique thermal and electrical properties. However, the success of carbon-based electronics depends on the rapid progress of the fabrication, doping and manipulation techniques. In this Special Issue, we focus on both insights and advancements in carbon-based electronics. We will also cover various topics ranging from synthesis, functionalisation, and characterisation of carbon-based materials, for their use in electronic devices, including advanced manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, ink-jet printing, spray-gun technique, etc.

The thesis by Mercè Pacios exploits properties of carbon nanotubes to design novel nanodevices. The prominent electrochemical properties of carbon nanotubes are used to design diverse electrode configurations. In combination with the chemical properties and (bio)functionalization versatility, these materials prove to be very appropriate for the development of electrochemical biosensors. Furthermore, this work also evaluates the semiconductor character of carbon nanotubes (CNT) for sensor technology by using a field effect transistor configuration (FET). The CNT-FET device has been optimized for operating in liquid environments. These electrochemical and electronic CNT devices are highly promising for biomolecule sensing and for the monitoring of biological processes, which can in the future lead to applications for rapid and simple diagnostics in fields such as biotechnology, clinical and environmental research.

There have been great advances in our understanding and use of inorganic carbon in recent years, following the development of the vapour synthesis of diamond, the discovery of C60 molecule and the discovery of carbon nanotubes. This issue contains the papers from the Symposium K Carbon-based Materials for Microelectronics of the European Materials Research Society meeting which was held on 16-19 June 1998, Strasbourg, France. The symposium covered fullerenes, nanotubes, diamond and amorphous carbon. It was able to show the similarities between the sp2 and sp3 forms of carbon, and between the crystalline, nano-structured and amorphous forms. Carbon is unique in having such a range of covalently bonded forms. The symposium consisted of 34 oral papers, of which 10 were invited, and 35 poster papers. The papers in this proceedings cover many of the recent developments in carbon, for example the effect of doping on the electronic structure of nanotubes, the discovery of phosphorus doping of diamond, the surface structure and electronic structure of diamond, and the field emission properties of diamond and diamond-like carbon. The applications of carbon lag some way behind those of other materials, but the symposium highlighted the uses or potential of carbon in xerography, in field emission displays and in photoconductivity-based sensors and radiation detectors.
