This technical paper describes the concept for the Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) under development by the Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL). It summarizes the major research and development projects that have been completed or are in progress in support of developing the system. With the IMIS concept as a baseline, work at AFHRL has centered on feasibility studies and field tests for automated technical information delivery; presenting the information on a hand-held, rugged computer in the shop and on the flightline; development of diagnostic models to improve fault isolation and rectification; automated Aircraft Battle Damage Assessment; and studies of the impact of IMIS on maintenance training. The final output of the IMIS program will be a prototype system and functional specifications for developing an IMIS for operational use. The Air Force's proposed Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) will make it possible for maintenance personnel to access several automated maintenance information systems to be integrated by the IMIS include the Automated Technical Order System (ATOS), the Core Automated Maintenance System (CAMS), supply systems, and computer-based training systems. Work is currently being accomplished in several areas to provide the basis for defining requirements for the IMIS. In the present investigation, potential training applications of the IMIS were examined. An analysis was made of base-level training requirements, and scenarios were developed to demonstrate how IMIS could be used to provide the required training.

This research was to determine to what extent Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) functional requirements could satisfy the maintenance information requirements of the ground-based Theater Air Control System. IMIS is a program sponsored by Armstrong Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio to automate maintenance information. To date, Armstrong Laboratory has only targeted aircraft maintenance for this automated program. The Theater Air Control System contains powerful military radars connected to a mobile communications and computer network. Theater Air Control System maintenance information requirements were identified through a study of the 728th Air Control Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and the existing aircraft requirements matrix for the Integrated Maintenance Information System was modified to meet Theater Air Control System requirements. The small amount of changes required to modify the aircraft matrix in order to satisfy ground TACS requirements indicate that ground TACS is a prime candidate for IMIS technology. Volume three of the IMIS Final Report documents the results and conclusions of each field test or demonstration conducted at Luke Air Force Base. Recommendations and lessons learned collected during the entire program (e.g., requirements analysis, system design, implementation, integration, test, installation, and demonstration) are provided. The IMIS project was an advanced development demonstration project which developed and field tested the technology to provide the maintenance technician with the capability to access all of the technical information (interactive electronic technical manuals, interactive diagnostics instructions, work orders, supply availability and ordering, historical data, training material, etc.) required to maintain aircraft via a single, integrated system, regardless of the source of that information. In the final phase of the project, an IMIS Demonstration System was developed and tested. In the field test, the performance of technicians on troubleshooting tasks when using the IMIS was compared with their performance on comparable tasks when using the paper technical orders. Test results indicated that technicians were able to perform the tasks significantly faster, used fewer parts, and made fewer serious errors when using the IMIS. In addition, the test indicated that, when using IMIS, non-specialist (crew chief) technicians could perform the tasks as effectively as the specialists.

The Air Force Human Resources Laboratory/Combat Logistics Branch (AFHRL/LRC) is engaged in the research and development (R & D) of an Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS). This system will be capable of accessing and integrating information from numerous Air Force data bases to provide technical support to the maintenance aid which will provide instructions for accomplishing maintenance tasks. A diagnostic module will be contained in the portable computer software to help the technician in performing complex diagnostic tasks. This paper describes the algorithms and decision logic employed in the IMIS module. The paper also describes the implementation of the diagnostic module in the portable computer used in a successful demonstration of integrated maintenance activities on the F-16 fire control radar system. Volume 2 of the IMIS Final Program Report discusses the three phases of the IMIS program: Requirements Analysis; System Design and Development; and Demonstration System Fabrication and Field Evaluation. Main objectives of the Requirements Analysis phase were to: (1) identify and analyze the functional, informational, and human computer interface requirements for an IMIS in the Air Force maintenance environment; (2) develop a system architecture which supported those requirements; and (3) develop system functional requirements specifications. Primary products of the Requirements Analysis were the IMIS Architecture and the System/Segment Specification. During System Design and Development, a subset of IMIS requirements was selected for implementation and demonstration. Upon completion of the IMIS demonstration system, hardware and software were installed and field tested at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. Objectives of the field evaluation were to: (1) test the IMIS concept under realistic operational conditions, (2) evaluate IMIS effectiveness in supporting the unit maintenance mission, (3) demonstrate the technical advantages of IMIS over the current system, and (4) identify strengths and weaknesses of the demonstration system which could be used in refining requirements for a production implementation.
