This dissertation focuses on the introduction and development of an integrated model-based design and optimization platform to solve the optimal design and optimal control, or hardware and software co-design, problem for hybrid electric propulsion systems. Specifically, the hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric powertrain systems with diesel and natural gas (NG) fueled compression ignition (CI) engines and large Li-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) for propelling a hybrid electric marine vessel are investigated. The combined design and control optimization of the hybrid propulsion system is formulated as a bi-level, nested optimization problem. The lower-level optimization applies dynamic programming (DP) to ensure optimal energy management for each feasible powertrain system design, and the upper-level global optimization aims at identifying the optimal sizes of key powertrain components for the powertrain system with optimized control. Recently, Li-ion batteries became a promising ESS technology for electrified transportation applications. However, these costly Li-ion battery ESSs contribute to a large portion of the powertrain electrification and hybridization costs and suffer a much shorter lifetime compared to other key powertrain components. Different battery performance modelling methods are reviewed to identify the appropriate degradation prediction approach. Using this approach and a large set of experimental data, the performance degradation and life prediction model of LiFePO4 type battery has been developed and validated. This model serves as the foundation for determining the optimal size of battery ESS and for optimal energy management in powertrain system control to achieve balanced reduction of fuel consumption and the extension of battery lifetime. In modelling and design of different hybrid electric marine propulsion systems, the life cycle cost (LCC) model of the cleaner, hybrid propulsion systems is introduced, considering the investment, replacement and operational costs of their major contributors. The costs of liquefied NG (LNG), diesel and electricity in the LCC model are collected from various sources, with a focus on present industrial price in British Columbia, Canada. The greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria air pollutant (CAP) emissions from traditional diesel and cleaner NG-fueled engines with conventional and optimized hybrid electric powertrains are also evaluated. To solve the computational expensive nested optimization problem, a surrogate model-based (or metamodel-based) global optimization method is used. This advanced global optimization search algorithm uses the optimized Latin hypercube sampling (OLHS) to form the Kriging model and uses expected improvement (EI) online sampling criterion to refine the model to guide the search of global optimum through a much-reduced number of sample data points from the computationally intensive objective function. Solutions from the combined hybrid propulsion system design and control optimization are presented and discussed. This research has further improved the methodology of model-based design and optimization of hybrid electric marine propulsion systems to solve complicated co-design problems through more efficient approaches, and demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of the new methods through their applications to tugboat propulsion system design and control developments. The resulting hybrid propulsion system with NG engine and Li-ion battery ESS presents a more economical and environmentally friendly propulsion system design of the tugboat. This research has further improved the methodology of model-based design and optimization of hybrid electric marine propulsion systems to solve complicated co-design problems through more efficient approaches, and demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of the new methods through their applications to tugboat propulsion system design and control developments. Other main contributions include incorporating the battery performance degradation model to the powertrain size optimization and optimal energy management; performing a systematic design and optimization considering LCC of diesel and NG engines in the hybrid electric powertrains; and developing an effective method for the computational intensive powertrain co-design problem.

The widely-used passenger and car ferries, sailing regularly and carrying heavy loads, form a unique type of marine vessel, providing vital transportation links to the coastal regions. Modern ferry ships usually are equipped with multiple diesel engines as prime movers. These diesel engines consume a large amount of marine diesel fuel with high fuel costs, and high emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) and other harmful air pollutants, including CO2, HC, NOx, SO2, CO, and PM. To reduce fuel costs and the harmful emissions, the marine industry and ferry service providers have been seeking clean ship propulsion solutions. In this work, the model-based design (MBD) and optimization methodology for developing advanced electrified vehicles (EV) are applied to the modelling, design and control optimizations of clean marine vessels with a hybrid electric propulsion system. The research focuses on the design and optimization of the hybrid electric ship propulsion system and uses an open deck passenger and car ferry, the MV Tachek, operated by the British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. Canada, as a test case. At present, the ferry runs on the Quadra Island - Cortes Island route in British Columbia, Canada, with dynamically changing ocean conditions in different seasons over a year. The research first introduces the ship operation profile, using statistical ferry operation data collected from the ferry's voyage data recorder and a data acquisition system that is specially designed and installed in this research. The ship operation profile model with ship power demand, travelling velocity and sailing route then serves as the design and control requirements of the hybrid electric marine propulsion system. The development of optimal power control and energy management strategies and the optimization of the powertrain architecture and key powertrain component sizes of the ship propulsion system are then carried out. Both of the series and parallel hybrid electric propulsion architectures have been studied. The sizes of crucial powertrain components, including the diesel engine and battery energy storage system (ESS), are optimized to achieve the best system energy efficiency. The optimal power control and energy management strategies are optimized using dynamic programming (DP) over a complete ferry sailing trip. The predicted energy efficiency and emission reduction improvements of the proposed new ship with the optimized hybrid propulsion system are compared with those of two benchmark vessels to demonstrate the benefits of the new design methodology and the optimized hybrid electric ship propulsion system design. These two benchmarks include a conventional ferry with the old diesel-mechanical propulsion system, and the Power Take In (PTI) hybrid electric propulsion systems installed on the MV Tachek at present. The simulation results using the integrated ship propulsion system model showed that the newly proposed hybrid electric ship could have 17.41% fuel saving over the conventional diesel-mechanical ship, and 22.98% fuel saving over the present MV Tachek. The proposed optimized hybrid electric propulsion system, combining the advantages of diesel-electric, pure electric, and mechanical propulsions, presented considerably improved energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The research forms the foundation for future hybrid electric ferry design and development.

Electrified Vehicles (EVs), including Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Pure Electric Vehicles (PEVs), can provide substantial improvements in energy efficiency, emission reduction, and lifecycle cost over conventional vehicles solely powered by Internal Combustion Engines (ICE). Progress on electrification of marine vessels has been made, but the pace has been impacted by factors such as the different operational load profile of vessels, relatively small production levels and longer or varied lifetimes. In this dissertation, hybrid electric and pure electric propulsion system designs for fishing boats and passenger ferries are studied based on in-field acquired operational data. A new integrated marine propulsion system modeling and simulation method and a dedicated mobile data acquisition system have been introduced to analyze the energy efficiency, emission reduction, and lifecycle costs of new or retrofitted fishing boats and passenger ferries with hybrid electric and pure electric powertrains. Following the automotive industry Model Based Design (MBD) approach, modeling and simulation of electrified vessels using the acquired operation profile have been carried out using backward and forward-facing methods. Series hybrid electric and pure electric powertrain system designs with powertrain component models and rule-based system control, including a properly sized electric Energy Storage System (ESS) with a Supercapacitor (SC) or battery, have been studied. The total CO2 equivalent (CO2e) or Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and lifecycle costs of various new, electrified vessel propulsion system designs have been evaluated. Clean propulsion system solutions for fishing boats and passenger ferries with detailed powertrain system and control system designs are given which provide a foundation for further research and development. This dissertation also addresses the environmental impact of Natural Gas (NG) as a transportation fuel, particularly for marine transportation use. A systematic evaluation of GHG emissions is provided for the upstream fuel supply chain of natural gas fuel in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) lifecycle GHG emissions produced in both the upstream supply chain and the downstream vessel propulsion are estimated quantitatively using manufacturer data and propulsion system models of marine vessels. Extensive data have been collected from oil and gas companies that have active operations in BC to determine the upstream supply chain GHG emissions of the NG fuel under three scenarios. The energy efficiency and emissions of natural gas engines are compared with traditional diesel fuel marine engines and generators. The results obtained indicate that LNG fuel can lower CO2e by 10% to 28% with reduced local air pollutants such as sulfur oxides and particulates, compared to conventional diesel fuel. However, engine methane slip during combustion should be monitored as it can have a significant impact on the GHG emissions and so offset the environmental benefits of LNG.

Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle’s operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.

Today uncertainties of petroleum supply and concerns over global warming call for further advancement of green vehicles with higher energy efficiency and lower green house gas (GHG) emissions. Development of advanced hybrid electric powertrain technology plays an important role in the green vehicle transformation with continuously improved energy efficiency and diversified energy sources. The added complexity of the multi-discipline based, advanced hybrid powertrain systems make traditional powertrain design method obsolete, inefficient, and ineffective. This research follows the industrial leading model-based design approach for hybrid electric vehicle powertrain development and introduces the optimization based methods to address several key design challenges in hybrid electric powertrain and its control system design. Several advanced optimization methods are applied to identify the proper hybrid powertrain architecture and design its control strategies for better energy efficiency. The newly introduced optimization based methods can considerably alleviate the design challenges, avoid unnecessary design iterations, and improve the quality and efficiency of the powertrain design. The proposed method is tested through the design and development of a prototype extended range electric vehicle (EREV), UVic EcoCAR. Developments of this advanced hybrid vehicle provide a valuable platform for verifying the new design method and obtaining feedbacks to guide the fundamental research on new hybrid powertrain design methodology.

The propulsion system behaviour is a key aspect for the overall dynamics of a ship. However, despite its great importance, numerical methodologies for detailed investigations on marine propulsion dynamics are not yet widely covered in scientific literature. This book presents the main steps for the development of a multi-physic simulation platform, able to represent the motions of a twin screw ship in six degrees of freedom, taking into account the whole propulsion system and automation effects. A number of mathematical sub-models had been developed and calibrated by a set of experimental tests, in model and full scale. Finally, the sea trials campaign of a ship is used to validate and tune the developed simulator. The proposed simulation methodology can be used in the ship preliminary design phase, in order to plan and test the propulsion system and automation. Further applications can include the design optimization and crew training.

The future national security environment will present the naval forces with operational challenges that can best be met through the development of military capabilities that effectively leverage rapidly advancing technologies in many areas. The panel envisions a world where the naval forces will perform missions in the future similar to those they have historically undertaken. These missions will continue to include sea control, deterrence, power projection, sea lift, and so on. The missions will be accomplished through the use of platforms (ships, submarines, aircraft, and spacecraft), weapons (guns, missiles, bombs, torpedoes, and information), manpower, materiel, tactics, and processes (acquisition, logistics, and so on.). Accordingly, the Panel on Technology attempted to identify those technologies that will be of greatest importance to the future operations of the naval forces and to project trends in their development out to the year 2035. The primary objective of the panel was to determine which are the most critical technologies for the Department of the Navy to pursue to ensure U.S. dominance in future naval operations and to determine the future trends in these technologies and their impact on Navy and Marine Corps superiority. A vision of future naval operations ensued from this effort. These technologies form the base from which products, platforms, weapons, and capabilities are built. By combining multiple technologies with their future attributes, new systems and subsystems can be envisioned. Technology for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, 2000-2035 Becoming a 21st-Century Force: Volume 2: Technology indentifies those technologies that are unique to the naval forces and whose development the Department of the Navy clearly must fund, as well as commercially dominated technologies that the panel believes the Navy and Marine Corps must learn to adapt as quickly as possible to naval applications. Since the development of many of the critical technologies is becoming global in nature, some consideration is given to foreign capabilities and trends as a way to assess potential adversaries' capabilities. Aviation propulsion development continues to rely upon fossil fuels for the vast majority of commercial and military applications.
