Excerpt from Industrial Liberty I have sought in the following pages to deal with the subject of industrial liberty in a manner which seems to me, in some respects, different from any that I have hitherto noticed. Aiming to keep in view principles rather than statistics, I have undertaken to make an analysis of the salient political and industrial evils of our time, and to measure, by fundamental rules, the departure, in some of our governmental and industrial methods, from these principles. Where it has been necessary to employ concrete, illustrations, I have endeavored, as far as possible, to make a dispassionate and an impersonal use of them. It is not assumed that the work is anything more than elementary, since it has been my purpose rather to indicate a line of inquiry than to attempt an exhaustive or even a comprehensive treatment of the subject, and I have undertaken my task with the hope that others better equipped may possibly, from some of the suggestion which I have ventured to make, be induced to engage in a more through discussion of those underlying principles upon which modern industry, in order to be wholesome, must rest. Excerpt from The Open Shop and Industrial Liberty The demand for the Closed Shop by the great majority of labor organizations, and the devices and combinations adopted to compel employers to submit to it, together with its fundamental antagonism to our traditional principles and liberties, make it a question difficult to com promise or adjust. In many instances, unions and employers that are willing to arbitrate all other questions are kept from agreement because they regard this as a matter of principle and not for compromise. The union says it cannot perform its functions without insisting upon the Closed Shop, and the employer says every capable man is entitled to equal opportunities in seeking employment, whether he is a Catholic or Protestant, a union man or non-union man. The issue is the cause of so many of our strikes - in some years over a third - and the pro longation of so many more that it is worthy of thorough attention. Excerpt from Labor and Liberty: A Model Constitution; Embodying All the Benefits of Collective Industry Since the inception of the idea, the chief objection to an extension of the functions of the State has been the alleged curtailment of individual liberty which it was erroneously supposed to carry with it. It is therefore the chief aim of this work to dispel such apprehensions by proving to all who are free from bias that it is possible for National Industry and Individual Liberty to dwell peaceably together. Excerpt from Towards Industrial Freedom Although the following papers were mostly written before the Great War broke out, yet it will be noticed that the consciousness runs through them of a great irnpending crisis and transforma tion of our social arrangements, both in this country and in Western Europe. It may not have been clear at that time exactly how that crisis would come about but now that the War is on us we can see how inevitable in a sense it has been, and how this deadly strife of nations has flowed (in the main) from the hopeless falsity of the social and industrial conditions prevailing in the countries concerned - the falsity of undemo cratic societies divided into classes whose chief object in life was to prey upon each other the falsity of a so-called social order which ignored the rights of women; and the falsity of an in dustrial system whose real object was not public welfare but private gain, not the production of goods for use but the exploitation of labor for.
