As two Asian giants and rising power, the interactions between India and China have global significance. This book analyses the multifaceted and multi-layered character of Sino-Indian relations since the beginning of the 21st century in a period marked by cooperation and competition. Positioned in a social constructivist framework that emphasizes mutual perceptions and socialization, the book draws analytical leverage from two core concepts – national identity and national interest – to form the basis of the research inquiry. The author argues that the dynamics of national identity and national interest play an important role in determining their relations and shows how and why in the current international structure, including a context of accelerated globalization, their national identities as rising power and emerging power coupled with national interest of economic development have defined and directed their international positions and foreign policy-making. A unique approach to analysing Sino-Indian relations, this book is of interest to academics in the fields of Asian Politics and International Relations.

As the aspirations of the two rising Asian powers collide, the China-India rivalry is likely to shape twenty-first-century international politics in the region and far beyond. This volume by T.V. Paul and an international group of leading scholars examines whether the rivalry between the two countries that began in the 1950s will intensify or dissipate in the twenty-first century. The China-India relationship is important to analyze because past experience has shown that when two rising great powers share a border, the relationship is volatile and potentially dangerous. India and China’s relationship faces a number of challenges, including multiple border disputes that periodically flare up, division over the status of Tibet and the Dalai Lama, the strategic challenge to India posed by China's close relationship with Pakistan, the Chinese navy's greater presence in the Indian Ocean, and the two states’ competition for natural resources. Despite these irritants, however, both countries agree on issues such as global financial reforms and climate change and have much to gain from increasing trade and investment, so there are reasons for optimism as well as pessimism. The contributors to this volume answer the following questions: What explains the peculiar contours of this rivalry? What influence does accelerated globalization, especially increased trade and investment, have on this rivalry? What impact do US-China competition and China’s expanding navy have on this rivalry? Under what conditions will it escalate or end? The China-India Rivalry in the Globalization Era will be of great interest to students, scholars, and policymakers concerned with Indian and Chinese foreign policy and Asian security.

As the U.S. forces withdraw from Afghanistan, a Taliban victory in that besieged, long-suffering country and the further Talibalization of Pakistan itself have become a real possibility. This book explores why Pakistan has become such a heavily militarized, ideologically driven state, yet remains deeply insecure, weak, and unable to unite itself or pacify its warring ethnic and religious groups.

This book examines the dynamics of the modern relationship between China and India. As key emerging powers in the international system, India and especially China have received much attention. However, most analysts who have studied Sino-Indian relations have done so through a neorealist lens which emphasizes the conflictual and competitive elements within the overall relationship. This has had the effect of obscuring how the China-India relationship is currently in the process of transformation. Drawing on a detailed and systematic analysis of the interlinked and increasingly important issues of maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, energy demands and concerns, and economic growth and interchange, Amardeep Athwal shows that not only is there an absence of mutual threat perception, but Sino-Indian bilateral trade is increasingly being framed institutionally and China and India are also beginning to coordinate policy in important areas such as energy policy. He concludes that neorealist accounts of Sino-Indian relations have difficulty in explaining these recent developments. However, rather than rejecting neorealist explanations in their entirety, he points towards a theoretical pluralism with an appeal to ‘soft’ realism and theories of neoliberalism and peaceful change. China-India Relations will be of interest to scholars of international relations and politics, international business and Asian studies.

Hard Realities presents ideology and strategies for Indian pre-eminence. Some of the interesting takeaways are:– Irrefutably, Pakistan’s existence is not in India’s interest. The time is ripe for dismantling Pakistan as India’s neighbor. Thus, Baluchistan, Sindh, West Punjab, and Kashmir must spin out of Pakistan in different ways, while the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) must be legitimately returned to Afghanistan. Consequently, India has no choice but to prepare its forces with a sense of urgency for the upcoming world economic disruption in the 2020s. However, India has shortcomings, such as historical failures by the Indian leaders to strategize properly with respect to Pakistan and China; deficient investment in engineering disciplines, and failure to boost its economy timely through indigenous defense production. Mostly, India’s personality is inappreciable. Moreover, India’s approach to China must be unambiguous that Tibet and Xinjiang are not a part of China. As such, India will not share a border with China. But, at present, China is running circles around India, and only technological development of high quality engineering talent will help India. India has a majorly tough row to hoe as a nation. Its 2.5 to 3-front war is its own creation. Though the destiny of nations is a potent force, India must not be found wanting when it comes to singly defending its military and economic independence.
