From Start-up to Ramp-up: Indian Context and Global Insights, published in July 2016, made a well-nuanced contribution to the much talked about domain of entrepreneurship. This book, India as Global Start-up Hub: Mission with Passion, is a significantly more detailed and insightful analysis of the multiple facets of start-up entrepreneurship in an integrative framework. The book unravels in its thirteen chapters a unique and phased discussion of Indian contextual realities and potentialities with global perspectives relevant for India to become a global start-up hub. The book also features twelve case studies that illustrate how founders conceptualised and grew their start-up ideas into successful and sustainable businesses in India. Through Chapter 14 reserved for the readers, the book encourages the readers to think, express and act on their own ideas, proposals and plans for reinforcing the Indian start-up ecosystem and even to turn into entrepreneurs and start-up founders themselves.

Economics is a social science concerned mainly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Beyond the various theories and models, however, economics has close relationship with day to day life. This book reviews the economic journey of India over the last seventy years, and seeks to stimulate the readers’ thinking on some major issues and potentialities facing the Indian economy. Five main themes flow through the book – India’s potential to be the World’s third largest economic power by 2030, the challenges of socio-economic equity that India faces, the several opportunities that India has in that journey, the critical role of governance, leadership, management and administration, and the importance of mindset changes to power India’s futureeconomic growth. A special focus is laid on the role of government policies and projects in socio-economic development. The book sensitises the readers, including college students in general, and students of economics in particular, to the happenings around us which have significant economic import. The book makes all through its seventy chapters several suggestions to power India’s growth as a global economic superpower, on a plank of socioeconomic equity. This book serves as an expansive thought primer and focussed execution guide for an economically independent and resurgent India.

Why do tech start-ups emerge rapidly in emerging economies like India? What kind of entrepreneurial ecosystems have evolved for tech start-up promotion? What is their structure? What role do they play in the nurturing of tech start-ups to the advantage of regional economies? This book examines the trend of evolving entrepreneurial ecosystems for tech start-ups in India, ascertains its structure and examines its role in the nurturing of tech start-ups over its lifecycle, to bring out its implications for Indian economy. At the outset, it traces and conceptualizes what it terms an "ideal ecosystem" for tech start-ups in the Indian context, and explores the historical evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems in two of the six leading start-up hubs in the country, namely, Bangalore and Hyderabad. It describes the characteristics and the structure of these ecosystems as they prevailed in the two start-up hubs, and analyses the role that they play in nurturing the development of tech start-ups. Finally, this book explores the ecosystem gaps that exist in the two cities, the factors causing these gaps, and makes policy recommendations to encourage the growth of a "healthy and vibrant" entrepreneurial ecosystem for the accelerated growth of tech start-ups in these two cities in particular, to promote employment, innovation and economic growth in the country at large. Policy makers, researchers, engineering and management students, technology and business mentors, angels, venture capitalists, and MNC executives will find the book informative, revealing and a source of valuable insights into a new, rapidly emerging entrepreneurial India.

The economic liberalization in India over the last three decades has provided a wealth of opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to start and expand their businesses. Since the economy opened up in the 1990s, entrepreneurial activity in the private sector has been largely responsible for the strong economic growth experienced in the country. India is presently the world’s third largest source of start-ups, and was ranked the second most entrepreneurial country in the world in the recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report, ahead of large economic powerhouses such as the United States, China and the UK. Entrepreneurship in India looks at the dynamic and changing nature of entrepreneurship in India. The book examines the history of entrepreneurship in India, different entrepreneurship models adopted, the entrepreneurial ecosystem and looks at the future of entrepreneurship in the country. This book will benefit businesspeople, policy makers and researchers looking to understand more about entrepreneurship in India, and offers guidance to foreign businesses looking to engage with entrepreneurs in India.

The Australia South Asia Research Centre (ASARC) was established in 1994 in one of the premier universities of the world—The Australian National University (ANU). Apart from its research and doctoral training activities, ASARC also needed a public forum with a global reach to involve the best minds working on economic development in India as well as to honour its founder, Dr K.R. Narayanan, President of the Republic of India. The K.R. Narayanan Oration series was developed in response to these twin needs. The first oration was held in 1994 and the latest (the 20th) was held in 2018. The first 10 orations were published by ANU Press in 2006. This new edition updates the volume to include all 20 orations delivered so far and provides an updated introduction. All these orations have been delivered by leading academics, scientists and policymakers deeply involved in the transformation of the Indian economy. This collection of the Narayanan Orations is thus at once both an expert account of key aspects of the economic development process in India and a peek into India’s potential in the future. As such, the publication of this volume marks a watershed in the intellectual debate on India’s economic reforms program and should be welcomed by all those interested in the economic development of the country.
