An impulsive control system contains a plant (usually a continuous-time dynamical system) and a control law. In the past ten years, many developments have occurred regarding control systems with impulsive effects or control systems via impulsive control laws. Impulsive effects can take place in plant dynamics or be introduced through control laws. This book studies the two main types of control systems. First are the controlling impulsive systems, in which the plant itself is formed by impulsive differential equations, so the control law will be either continuous or impulsive. In engineering, the impulsive control serves as a crucial method for making nanodevices. The second control systems are impulsively controlled dynamical systems, where the plant has no impulsive effects, though the control laws introduce impulsive effects to the plant's state variables. The engineering application here is within non-linear communications. The concept of impulsive control and its mathematical foundation called - pulsive di?erential equations,or di?erential equations with impulse e?ects,or di?erential equations with discontinuous righthand sides have a long history. In fact, in mechanical systems impulsive phenomena had been studied for a long time under di?erent names such as: mechanical systems with impacts. The study of impulsive control systems (control systems with impulse e?ects) has also a long history that can be traced back to the beginning of modern control theory. Many impulsive control methods were successfully developed under the framework of optimal control and were occasionally called impulse control. The so called impulse control is not exactly the impulsive control as will be de?ned in this book. The reader should not mixup these two kinds of control methods though in many papers they were treated as the same. - cently, there is a tendency of integrating impulsive control into hybrid control systems. However, this e?ort does not have much help to the development of impulsive control theory because impulsive systems can only be studied by the very mathematical tool based on impulsive di?erential equations. The e?ort to invent a very general framework of hybrid control system for stu- ing impulsive control and other hybrid control problems will contribute no essential knowledge to impulsive control.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONSMOOTH ANALYSIS AND GEOMETRIC METHODS IN DETERMINISTIC OPTIMAL CONTROL is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The purpose of this workshop was to concentrate on powerful mathematical techniques that have been de veloped in deterministic optimal control theory after the basic foundations of the theory (existence theorems, maximum principle, dynamic program ming, sufficiency theorems for sufficiently smooth fields of extremals) were laid out in the 1960s. Optimal Impulsive Control explores the class of impulsive dynamic optimization problems—problems that stem from the fact that many conventional optimal control problems do not have a solution in the classical setting—which is highly relevant with regard to engineering applications. The absence of a classical solution naturally invokes the so-called extension, or relaxation, of a problem, and leads to the notion of generalized solution which encompasses the notions of generalized control and trajectory; in this book several extensions of optimal control problems are considered within the framework of optimal impulsive control theory. In this framework, the feasible arcs are permitted to have jumps, while the conventional absolutely continuous trajectories may fail to exist. The authors draw together various types of their own results, centered on the necessary conditions of optimality in the form of Pontryagin’s maximum principle and the existence theorems, which shape a substantial body of optimal impulsive control theory. At the same time, they present optimal impulsive control theory in a unified framework, introducing the different paradigmatic problems in increasing order of complexity. The rationale underlying the book involves addressing extensions increasing in complexity from the simplest case provided by linear control systems and ending with the most general case of a totally nonlinear differential control system with state constraints. Many evolution processes are characterized by the fact that at certain moments of time they experience a change of state abruptly. These processes are subject to short-term perturbations whose duration is negligible in comparison with the duration of the process. Consequently, it is natural to assume that these perturbations act instantaneously, that is, in the form of impulses. It is known, for example, that many biological phenomena involving thresholds, bursting rhythm models in medicine and biology, optimal control models in economics, pharmacokinetics and frequency modulated systems, do exhibit impulsive effects. Thus impulsive differential equations, that is, differential equations involving impulse effects, appear as a natural description of observed evolution phenomena of several real world problems.
