Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 15 Winding down from the ridge, a precipitous little footpath leads to an alcove, a narrow strip of sand placed midway between the feet of the lesser falls above the main fall, and the giant's final leap. This sandy bar resembles a bit of rocky sea-coast. The porphyry cliffs, on either hand, are worn into cave-like Open ings into which the water fiercely beats during the freshets of spiing and early summer. How vast the volume of water which burst over these stupendous ledges must be at that particular time of the year, can be imagined from the fact that the river rises nine feet above its general level, and that the roar Of the tortured waters may be heard at a distance of many miles. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 15: September, 1912 Eminent men have repeatedly declared that if they were cast alone on an island and had to live there for an indefinite time with only one book of their own choice to read, that book would be the Bible. And the innumerable lists of best books selected this half century have invariably included the Hebrew Scriptures as among the first and most important. Now, the New Testament, being part of this volume, is therefore part of the most valuable literary and historical set of documents that has come to us out of the past. Judged as literature merely, the Old Testament is perhaps greater than the New. Carlyle thought the Book of Job the finest literary product of the ages, and most critics would agree with him in this. But the New Testament, though it also contains writings of supreme literary value, has had incomparably greater influence in the world than the Old Testament. The New Testament is not, properly speaking, one book, but many books. It consists of some twenty-seven books, written by seven different writers. The books, given in the order in which they appear in the accepted version are: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, First Corinthians, Second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First Thessalonians, Second Thessalonians, First Timothy, Second Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, First Peter, Second Peter, First John, Second John, Third John, Jude, and Revelation. Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 15: July, 1912 I say, in all candor, that I am sorry that we cannot have another day or two in which to continue our conference, but it would not be wisdom to do so, under all the circumstances. There are many of our brethren whom you would delight to hear, and who are indeed a tower of strength in testimony and knowledge of the principles of the gospel, who would be delighted to address you, if opportunity would permit. Our brethren of the presiding seventy, will be deprived of the opportunity during this conference of speaking to you, which I regret quite as much as you or they do, and I am sure you all regret not to have the privilege of hearing them; but I cannot see how the time could have been more wisely or earnestly, more intelligently or profitably, spent than it has been. We have had testimonies here from those who mark the third generation of Latter-day Saints, and I am satisfied that there is perhaps no one, other than the Prophet Joseph Smith himself, who could have borne more powerful testimonies of the truth or could have told the truth more clearly, plainly and forcibly than it has been told by these young men who are of the third or fourth generations of Latter-day Saints. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 15: August, 1912 We visit the new town hall. The grounds surrounding this splendid work of architecture have been tastefully laid out, and constitute the city's valhalla of the memory of those who have served in the senate and in the field, for we see statues of Sir John Robinson (natal's first prime minister), and the Right Hon. Harry Escombe, P. Whose name is memorably identified with harbor improvements. There is also a fine memorial to Durban's volunteers who fell during the british-boer war. We availed ourselves of a double-decker electric car to reach the Botanical Gardens. The gardens contain a magnificent collection of ow ering shrubs and trees, also sweet-smelling owers of variegated lines. We were told they were the most tropical in character of any to be seen in South Africa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
