This project examines the motion and aerodynamic data associated with dynamic wind tunnel tests. Historically, the aerodynamic data measured with dynamic testing has not correlated well with actual flight data, and in general has not been used in system simulations for aircrew training or flight analysis. An improved data reduction method is presented to extract signal data from dynamic tests. The reduction method applies a Fourier series approximation fit to oscillatory data, and a linear regression fit to steady state data. Both methods provide good signal extraction and data smoothing. Additionally, the report documents methods and equations developed by Juri Kalviste for the handling, analysis, and simulation of dynamic data. A prototype software program has been developed to exercise the reduction methods. The program uses a new modeling architecture that enables rapid, seamless incorporation of alternative reduction or aerodynamic modeling methods.

Download The Prediction of Errors and the Improvement of Data Obtained in Wind-tunnel Heat-transfer Tests Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The measurement of heat-transfer data in a high-speed wind tunnel is considered in detail. The analysis is restricted to tests where transient temperature measurements are made by thermocouples attached to the back face of a thin-walled model. Methods of estimating the error in obtaining a heat-transfer coefficient due to extraneous heat-transfer rates or the choice of a data-reduction method are presented. The error caused by the presence of a thermocouple in a thin wall was found experimentally. Methods of improving heat-transfer data, including the Thomas-Fitzsimmons conduction correction method, are discussed. (Author).

Download A Wind Tunnel Free-flight Data-reduction Program for Either Spinning Or Non Spinning Models Utilizing Data from a Single Plane Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This report describes PLANAR, a data-reduction program for wind tunnel free-flight tests which utilizes data from a single plane. The program calculates moment, force and, in the case of a spinning model, Magnus coefficients. The program is written for an IBM 7090 computer operating under the IBSYS monitor. The mathematical formulation of the problem and the computer program are presented. The program description includes a FORTRAN listing and instructions for its use. (Author).

Download Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The book "Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research" is comprised of 33 chapters divided in five sections. The first 12 chapters discuss wind tunnel facilities and experiments in incompressible flow, while the next seven chapters deal with building dynamics, flow control and fluid mechanics. Third section of the book is dedicated to chapters discussing aerodynamic field measurements and real full scale analysis (chapters 20-22). Chapters in the last two sections deal with turbulent structure analysis (chapters 23-25) and wind tunnels in compressible flow (chapters 26-33). Contributions from a large number of international experts make this publication a highly valuable resource in wind tunnels and fluid dynamics field of research.

Download Investigation of Correction Methods for Interference Effects in Open-Jet Wind Tunnels Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Oliver Fischer analyzes the interference effects occurring in free-stream wind tunnels as well as their correction and simulation. With this work, the investigated correction method and the comparability of its results as well as flow simulation results are improved. The model wind tunnel of the IVK, University of Stuttgart, is simulated in various wind tunnel configurations. The application of a correction procedure to the corresponding experimental data from the model wind tunnel of the IVK is examined. These correction results are directly comparable with interference-free simulation results and thus allow a conclusion on the functionality of the correction method. Based on these findings, this thesis proposes a modification of the correction method that improves the comparability of corrected experimental results and CFD simulations in idealized test conditions. About the Author Oliver Fischer works as an engineer in aerodynamics development for a renowned German automobile manufacturer.
