The cost per order varied for these distributors in reverse order to their volume, with the large-volume distributor having the lowest cost per order, and the low-volume distributor having the highest cost per order. However, from the improvements that resulted from this research in order assembly operations, it is evident that the low-volume distributor can lower his costs and thereby strengthen his competitive position by organizing his stock properly, by selecting equipment suitable for his operations, and by analyzing the weak points of his materials-handling system in much the same manner as was done in this study.
