Climate change is considered to be a threat to the survival of the planet. Among the many contributors to climate change is the production of food. The agriculture industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental challenges, such as global warming potential, that increases the threat of climate change. This thesis analyzes the required resources and environmental impacts of producing 1 kg of chicken, pork, and tofu. It also analyzes how the various resources, including feed, organic soybean, electricity, housing systems, manure management, and others, compare to one another concerning their environmental impacts. Finally, it reviews the process involved in producing each product that contributes the most to the impact categories of acidification potential, eutrophication potential, land use, and global warming potential. To address these issues, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was completed by performing a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) in the openLCA software, using reviewed data from the ecoinvent database. A Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) took the results from the LCI using the ReCiPe method and transformed them into impact category results that show the effect on the environment. The impact category results reveal that pork has the highest environmental impact in all categories analyzed. Though tofu has the lowest environmental impact in most categories, chicken has the lowest impact in the agricultural land occupation potential category. This study suggests that while demand for meat continues to grow worldwide, the environmental implications are high enough that changes should be made within the supply chain in order to ensure a sustainable future. Keywords: Life Cycle Assessment, environmental impact, impact potential, animal agriculture, plant-based, food, chicken, pork, tofu.

Greenhouse gas emissions by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through the wider use of existing best practices and technologies. FAO conducted a detailed analysis of GHG emissions at multiple stages of various livestock supply chains, including the production and transport of animal feed, on-farm energy use, emissions from animal digestion and manure decay, as well as the post-slaughter transport, refrigeration and packaging of animal products. This report represents the most comprehensive estimate made to-date of livestocks contribution to global warming as well as the sectors potential to help tackle the problem. This publication is aimed at professionals in food and agriculture as well as policy makers.

Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure. The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries prominent focus on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation. The State of Food and Agriculture is produced annually. Each edition contains an overview of the current global agricultural situation, as well as more in-depth coverage of a topical theme."
