COVID-19 is a highly contagious viral illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome SARSCoV-2. It has had a devastating effect on the world’s demographics with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. After the influenza pandemic of 1918, it has emerged as the most consequential global health crisis. After the first cases of this predominantly respiratory viral illness were first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late December 2019, SARS-CoV- 2 rapidly disseminated across the world in a short span of time, compelling the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 has proven to be a worldwide unprecedented disaster. It has physically, psychologically, socially, and economically afflicted billions of people across the globe. Its transmission is significantly high. Serious postrecovery has been noticed in a large number of people. The virus is highly mutable and new and new strains are appearing, and many of them such as delta, BA1 and BA2 subvariants as well as their hybrids have been considered by the WHO as concerning. The virus has exhibited deleterious impacts on bodily systems other than the respiratory system (primary target) such as the brain, hematological system, liver, kidneys, endocrine system, etc. Right after its declaration as a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, governments in various countries declared lockdowns to combat the spread of disease, causing major disruption to the lives of billions of people. Besides the impact on health and healthcare systems, education was changed with the introduction of online and or hybrid systems to help students continue to learn. Though the pandemic has subsided now, the emergence of new variants continues and lifestyle changes such as online learning and work from home have continued. Researchers who successfully mitigated the negative impact of social media and effectively used it for acceptance of medicinal or non-medicinal measures during pandemics by developing a realtime information sharing system and assembling a multidisciplinary team of experts to collect and analyze data from a variety of social media platforms across the global diaspora to better understand people’s perceptions and attitudes, as well as to spot early warning signs of error and correct them before they proliferate. They also emphasized the necessity of addressing people’s perceptions in order to increase awareness and education, so that social media may be used to promote public trust collaboration, and improved adherence to epidemic control measures. In totality the pandemic affected the environment and ecosystem as a whole positively due to a decrease in vehicles on roads and less movement of persons from one place to another. However, medical waste was increased and new measures were needed to handle it. People have had to change their habits in everyday life in order to live with the pandemic and protect themselves and others. This volume focuses on the implications of COVID-19 on education, environment, and lifestyle. It includes chapters on the transformation of education systems and introduction of hybrid modes of education, impact on environment, management of solid wastes, and development of innovative gadgets and architectural designs to help deal with the pandemic. Other chapters cover diet, family systems, and adoption of new norms in pandemic times. This paper combines pre-pandemic face-to-face survey data with follow up phone surveys collected in April-May 2020 to quantify the overall and differential impacts of COVID-19 on household food security, labor market participation and local food prices in Nigeria. We exploit spatial variation in exposure to COVID-19 related infections and lockdown measures along with temporal differences in our outcomes of interest using a difference-in-difference approach. We find that those households exposed to higher COVID-19 cases or mobility lockdowns experience a significant increase in measures of food insecurity. Examining possible transmission channels for this effect, we find that COVID-19 significantly reduces labor market participation and increases food prices. We find that impacts differ by economic activities and households. For instance, lockdown measures increased households' experience of food insecurity by 12 percentage points and reduced the probability of participation in non-farm business activities by 13 percentage points. These lockdown measures have smaller impacts on wage-related activities and farming activities. In terms of food security, households relying on non-farm businesses, poorer households, those with school-aged children, and those living in remote and conflicted-affected zones have experienced relatively larger deteriorations in food insecurity. These findings can help inform immediate and medium-term policy responses, including social protection policies aiming at ameliorating the impacts of the pandemic, as well as guide targeting strategies of governments and international donor agencies by identifying the most impacted sub-populations.

"The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has generated much uncertainty around the HE landscape. Global lockdown measures led to university campuses closing and moving to an online mode for teaching and learning. Scholars have reported that the physical closure of HE institutions has been detrimental to student learning worldwide, whilst others have advocated the possible opportunities that may arise from reshaping HE through technologies. The disruption caused to education by the pandemic has had a significant impact on the learning experience for students; self-directed study time has increased, levels of stress and anxiety experienced by students has increased, and the lack of face-to-face interaction with lecturers and other students has led to feelings of isolation. Educators have reported that due to the immediate urgency of the lockdown there was little time to plan in advance for online delivery and assessment. From a financial perspective, the effects of the pandemic led to a loss for UK universities of 1790 million during 2020, which is forecast to increase to a loss of 12.6bn during 2021. Enrolment numbers have declined, and the recruitment of international students, who make up a high number of the market sector, has been severely impacted. It is clear that HE institutions as a whole are facing significant challenges in these uncertain times. This edited collection addresses the need to examine the far-reaching impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic upon teaching and learning in higher education, examining the challenges and opportunities associated with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and outlining current perspectives, practices and innovations which will contribute to an understanding of the current situation for higher education institutions. A two-day virtual regional consultation titled “Engaging with Academia and Research Institutions (ARIs) to Support Family Farmers and Food System Transformation During and Post COVID-19 Pandemic in Asia” was held by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) from 8–9 December 2021. The consultation was organized in collaboration with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Cooperation Centre of Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), Group For Research and Technology Exchanges (GRET), and with technical assistance from FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP). It was attended by 157 international participants and 51 speakers coming from different academic and research institutions (ARIs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs), government agencies, and development partners. The regional consultation highlighted the importance of collaboration among ARIs, family farmers’ organizations, government agencies, and development partners in Asia in enhancing the livelihoods of family farmers and developing their capacities to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic through agroecology. This publication compiles the proceedings of the two-day virtual regional consultation and marks an important milestone in initiating a stocktaking of existing initiatives and collaborations between ARIs, inter-government agencies and family farmers’ organizations in the region with a specific focus on agroecology and sustainable food systems.
