Excerpt from Illinois Oil Shales The investigation indicates that the oil shales are more likely to be of future significance than of immediate commercial importance. For many years attention has been directed to oil shales, especially those in Colorado, as potential sources of petroleum. The recent announce ment that the Union Oil Company is erecting a retort near Rifle, Colo., for the processing of an oil shale averaging 30 gallons per ton of recoverable shale oil (oil and Gas Jour., 1955) indicates the increasing significance of oil shales in areas affording a combination of suitable resources and favorable economic conditions. Certain Illinois shales have been known for some time to contain oil (worthen, 1870, p. 105; Ashley, 1917, p. 314 and 319; Winchester, 1919, p. 51; Barrett, 1922; Cox, 1914, p. 26 However, only a relatively few shales were tested, and the resulting data were incomplete or not comparable with current analytical data. Excerpt from Illinois Petroleum: July 11, 1931 In 1930 widespread adverse economic conditions in the oil industry were reflected in Illinois by 938 per cent decrease in the annual production from that of 1929 (table 2) and by a marked decrease in the number of wells drilled (table Approximately seven - eighths of the decrease in production is the result of the 25 per cent curtailment, effective September first, according to the agreement of the southeastern Illinois Operators. Of the total number of wells drilled during 1930 in Illinois, 197 holes were drilled on or close to proved territory, _and 56 were wildcats. Of these 56 Wildcats, only seven were located by geologists. No important new pools nor new producing formations were discovered in 1930. Few of the wild'cat wells drilled were favorably located with respect to geologic structure. Unless there is a substantial increase in crude oil prices it is unlikely that there will be any marked revival in drilling activity during 1931. If there is no change in the present proration agreement it is estimated that Illinois will produce about 5 million barrels of oil in 1931. Excerpt from Geology and Oil Possibilities of the Illinois Basin The present very active interest in the oil possibilities of the Illinois basin has brought to the Survey many requests for just such information as is presented in this paper. It is obvious that this discussion will be of greatest value if it is published immediately. It is therefore presented with a series of unrevised maps because if these were to be brought up to date considerable delay would be unavoidable. Excerpt from Age of the Springville Shale (Mississippian) Of Southern Illinois In 1956 Workman and Gillette (fig. 18, p. 36) referred the Springville to the Osage Group (valmeyer Series), and showed it overlying the Chouteau, there by indirectly correlating the limestone with the Chouteau and removing it from the Springville. Thus, prior to the present study, the limestone near the base of the Spring ville Shale had been accepted as Chouteau; the shale overlying the limestone had been called Osage, although no supporting evidence had been given; and the age of the gray shale beneath the limestone remained uncertain, although by implication it had been referred to the New Albany by Workman and Gillette. Some doubt remained concerning the correlation of the limestone, however, which correlation was the major reason for considering the Springville Shale to be of Valmeyer rather than Kinderhook age. With the above facts in mind we restudied all principal outcrops of the Springville Shale in Union and Alexander counties (fig. 1) along with their fossil faunas and are proposing several changes in classification as shown in figure 2. Excerpt from Illinois Petroleum, Vol. 18: November 2, 1929 The information on strata above the Warsaw formation was obtained from wells within short distances of the favorable structure, but data on the probable thickness and character of the deeper formations is based upon a study of the records of the Adam Funk well, the Chester well, and the Lange well (fig. Detailed logs of these wells may be obtained from the State Geological Survey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Oil and Gas in Bond, Macoupin, and Montgomery Counties, Illinois The first drilling in this county of which but little is now known, was done about 1867 by St. Louis capital. One well was put down without striking oil. N 0 further efforts were made until 1909, when the Impromptu Exploration Company opened a small gas field three miles southwest of Carlinville. Up to date, about 35 wells have been drilled within a radius of five miles from this town, and of these, six produced gas which was carried to town through a four-inch main, and was sufficient for illuminating purposes in Carlinville for two or three years. The wells have since been abandoned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
