Recent advances in wireless technology have led to the emergence of industry standards such as WirelessHART. These strategies minimise the need for cumbersome cabling, thereby reducing costs. However, applying them involves the challenge of handling stochastic network delays, which can degrade control performance. To address this problem, commonly used simple PID could be employed. However, PID suffers from gain range limitations when used in a delayed environment. Furthermore, model-based controllers are complex and require exact models of the process and systematic system identification for implementation. Therefore, to address these issues, the book proposes control strategies that retain the simplicity of PID in terms of ease of tuning and structure, while improving on the performance of the closed-loop system with regard to stochastic network delays and mismatches. Concretely, it proposes and discusses three strategies, namely: Setpoint Weighting (SW), Filtered Predictive PI (FPPI) and Optimal Fuzzy PID. In order to optimise some of these controllers, two novel hybrid optimisation algorithms combining the dynamism of the Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) and advantages of both the Spiral Dynamic Algorithm (SDA) and the Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimisation (APSO) have been used. The strategies proposed here can also be applied in stochastic control scenarios (not necessarily wireless) characterised by uncertainties. This book will be useful to engineers and researchers in both industry and academia. In industry, it will be particularly useful to research and development efforts where PID controllers and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) involving both short and long term stochastic network delay are employed. Thus, it can be used for real-time control design in these areas. In the academic setting, the book will be useful for researchers, undergraduate and graduate students of instrumentation and control. Gain range limitation of conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers has made them unsuitable for application in a delayed environment. These controllers are also not suitable for use in a Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (WirelessHART) protocol networked control setup. This is due to stochastic network-induced delay and uncertainties such as packet dropout. The use of setpoint weighting strategy has been proposed to improve the performance of the PID in such environments. However, the stochastic delay still makes it difficult to achieve optimal performance. This chapter proposes an adaptation to the setpoint weighting technique. The proposed approach will be used to adapt the setpoint weighting structure to variation in WirelessHART network-induced delay through fuzzy inference. Result comparison of the proposed approach with both setpoint weighting and proportional-integral (PI) control strategy shows improved setpoint tracking and load regulation. For the first-, second- and third-order systems considered, analysis of the results in the time domain shows that in terms of overshoot, undershoot, rise time, and settling times, the proposed approach outperforms both the setpoint weighting and the PI controller. The approach also shows faster recovery from disturbance effect.

first industrial application of MPC was in 1973. A key motivation was to provide better performance than could be obtained with the widely-used PID controller whilst making it easy to replace the PID controller unit or module with his new algorithm. It was the advent of digital control technology and the use of software control algorithms that made this replacement easier and more acceptable to process engineers. A decade of industrial practice with PFC was reported in the archival literature by Jacques Richalet et al. in 1978 in an important seminal Automatica paper. Around this time, Cutler and Ramaker published the dynamic matrix control algorithm that also used knowledge of future reference signals to determine a sequence of control signal adjustment. Thus, the theoretical and practical development of predictive control methods was underway and subsequent developments included those of generalized predictive control, and the whole armoury of MPC methods. Jacques Richalet’s approach to PFC was to seek an algorithm that was: • easy to understand; • easy to install; • easy to tune and optimise. He sought a new modular control algorithm that could be readily used by the control-technician engineer or the control-instrument engineer. It goes without saying that this objective also forms a good market strategy.
