Ego was in China in the service of the emperor Kublai, where he collected his information of Japan. It was represented that the inhabitants were of middling size, well made, and of fair complexions, and of civilized manners. They have gold in the greatest abundance, it being inexhaustible. The entire roof of the king's palace is covered with gold, in the same manner as houses elsewhere are covered with lead. The ceilings of the halls are of the same metal. Many of the apartments have small tables of pure gold, considerably thick, and the windows also have golden. Ornaments.
