Former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams' charisma, generosity and high-energy hustle made him one of America's most popular pro athletes during the 90s, and eventually landed him a remarkable $86 million contract with the New Jersey Nets. Referred to as "The People's Player," Jayson's magnetic appeal and tenacity on the boards made him a fierce, yet beloved competitor who spent his time off court flying planes, building houses, and tending to the chores on the farm with his father. His easy charm and sidesplitting one-liners consistently landed him on NBA sportswriters' All-Interview team and made him an audience favorite on the media circuits. But few knew the depths of pain, tragedy and addiction masked by a smile his grandmother called his "most beautiful attire." Lying on his bunk amongst "the most confrontational bunch of misfits," Jayson recalls his rapid climb and mighty fall, and his father's wise words: "A lifetime of happiness as you know it, Jayson, no man alive could bear it. It would be hell on earth. You have to stick to your morning routine." From the New York Times bestselling author of Loose Balls, Humbled is a powerful and candid collection of Jayson's personal letters and journals from behind bars. Shocking revelations, surprising connections, shameful secrets, and scars that only God can heal-Jayson holds nothing back as he writes about his journey to faith on both sides of the barbed-wire fences.

Letters from prison testifying to deeply felt ethical principles have a long history, extending from antiquity to the present day. In the early modern era, the rise of printing houses helped turn these letters into a powerful form of political and religious resistance. W. Clark Gilpin’s fascinating book examines how letter writers in England—ranging from archbishops to Quaker women—consolidated the prison letter as a literary form. Drawing from a large collection of printed prison letters written from the reign of Henry VIII to the closing decades of the seventeenth century, Gilpin explores the genre's many facets within evolving contexts of reformation and revolution. The writers of these letters portrayed the prisoner of conscience as a distinct persona and the prison as a place of redemptive suffering where bearing witness had the power to change society. The Letter from Prison features a diverse cast of characters and a literary genre that combines drama and inspiration. It is sure to appeal to those interested in early modern England, prison literature, and cultural forms of resistance.

A collection of Jackson's letters from prison, "Soledad Brother" is an outspoken condemnation of the racism of white America and a powerful appraisal of the prison system that failed to break his spirit but eventually took his life. Jackson's letters make palpable the intense feelings of anger and rebellion that filled black men in America's prisons in the 1960s. But even removed from the social and political firestorms of the 1960s, Jackson's story still resonates for its portrait of a man taking a stand even while locked down.

Letters to a Lifer provides a rare insight into life without parole (LWOP) for juveniles in the USA. A true story from Pennsylvania, it is a compelling tale of faith and redemption. Cindy Sanford tells how a chance correspondence with Ken, a prisoner artist, began to change her entrenched ideas about offenders. Her book now adds voice to the work of the USA’s National Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth and will also be of interest to students of restorative justice. In 1999, America’s Most Wanted broadcast details of a notorious crime. Twelve years later Cindy was introduced to Ken, one of the two boys convicted, through his remarkable wildlife art. By then a young man, Ken had spent half his life in prison. Initially wary, Cindy was surprised to find him humble, polite and deeply grateful for her interest. Gradually she and her family were able to look beyond his crime to the person he had become. Despite a hardening of attitudes generally towards offenders in the USA and other parts of the western world, Letters to a Lifer shows why the campaign against LWOP sentences for juveniles is nonetheless gaining momentum.

Letters from Prison This book contains the letters of my son wrote to me and my family while he was in prison. He was out of state on a fishing trip when a friend broke into his house and set up a meth lab. When he returned home and started cooking his friend heard a loud bang on the door with a loud voice shouting. "This is the police, open the door!" He opened the door and they shouted, "Stand back! We need to search your house!" The door to the back bedroom was locked. They cut the lock and found several fans running. All evidence was gone, but the smell was still there. My son was arrested and taken to jail. I saw his picture and the story on the evening news. I went to his house the next morning and police were everywhere. I ask, "What is going on?" He answered, "We found a meth lab in the bedroom." I said, "Why was my son arrested. He didn't do it, he was out of state for weeks, fishing!" The police wanted my son to narc for them. If he didn't, they wouldn't take him to court. He narced for two years. Almost got killed and spent lots of money trying to make a drug bust. He did not make a bust. We had to hire a lawyer and got on court. When the judge ask how do you plead. My son answered, "Your honor, I'm not going to plead guilty to something that I did not do, nor knew nothing about." I am guilty of trying to help the guy after his family kicked him out. I let him spend a few night at my house while I was on my trip. He was sentenced for 10 years for maintaining a drug house. He was sent to prison. He was put on work release. He was a master of electrion so started making good money. He has his own apartment at the prison. He said it wasn't so bad, just missing family and friends and was the worst punishment. He saved enough money to buy a trucking company while working after he was released. He served 2 and a half years of the 10. When he got out, he said, "Thank you God! If I haven't went to prison, I would never have saved enough money to buy my own business. He wrote me every day for those 2 and a half years. I love him so! That's why I'm sharing this story and his letters.

A DISTANT CONNECTION is an absolute must read for all who find themselves intrigued by the criminal lifestyle in its many facets. From a hi-maximum security prison cell constructed to maximize human loneliness; a site designed to kill the mind; Kenneth Jamal Lighty manages to not only live, but thrive. Through self-cultivated intellect and hard-earned wisdom, he uses the single, most powerful weapon known to a prisoner -the ink pen- to not only bring the plight of the incarcerated into the consciousness of many throughout the world, but also to make a difference by inspiring and informing those whom he manages to come into contact with. In his book debut, Kenneths efforts to warn a generation of youth who appear to be enamored with street life are nothing short of remarkable. Reaching out to several of his peers, spanning several states across the country, and with various affiliations, he manages to create a pseudo-panel, providing a platform for prisoners to be able to share the hard-earned wisdom attained from years of making their own mistakes, in an effort to alter the trajectory of a generation that is seemingly on a road that will only lead to one or two places: the penitentiary or the cemetery. Via letters, filled with rawness and empathy, each reader is challenged to try a different route to success. Each individual opens up to reveal the pain beneath the exterior, and offers sound advice on how not to end up a victim of bad choices, before it is too late. Long overdue, A Distant Connection is a much needed intervention that will hopefully inspire change, and place our young people back on the path that will lead to a productive, healthy future.

Urban God Talk: Constructing a Hip Hop Spirituality, edited by Andre Johnson, is a collection of essays that examine the religious and spiritual in hip hop. The contributors argue that the prevailing narrative that hip hop offers nothing in the way of religion and spirituality is false. From its beginning, hip hop has had a profound spirituality and advocates religious views—and while not orthodox or systemic, nevertheless, many in traditional orthodox religions would find the theological and spiritual underpinnings in hip hop comforting, empowering, and liberating. In addition, this volume demonstrates how scholars in different disciplines approach the study of hip hop, religion, and spirituality. Whether it is a close reading of a hip hop text, ethnography, a critical studies approach or even a mixed method approach, this study is a pedagogical tool for students and scholars in various disciplines to use and appropriate for their own research and understanding. Urban God Talk will inspire not only scholars to further their research, but will also encourage publishers to print more in this field. The contributors to this in-depth study show how this subject is an underrepresented area within hip hop studies, and that the field is broad enough for numerous monographs, edited works, and journal publications in the future.
