Finland's precarious proximity to Russia makes this small country a unique and revealing study in contemporary social and economic patterns. The author demonstrates that "in spite of Finland's deep-rooted cultural kinship with Scandinavia...new factors, often political in nature, have affected the development of society very differently in each of these countries." One of the most decisive differences, as his book makes clear, is the position of the Communist party in Finnish politics. In this first English book on the Finnish situation, Carl Erik Knoellinger makes perceptive analyses of detailed data on the varied aspects of his subject.

Prolabor critics often question the effectiveness of the National Labor Relations Board. Some go so far as to call the Board labor's enemy number one. In a daring book that is sure to be controversial, Ellen Dannin argues that the blame actually lies with judicial decisions that have radically "rewritten" the National Labor Relations Act. But rather than simply bemoan this problem, Dannin offers concrete solutions for change. Dannin calls for labor to borrow from the strategy mapped out by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in the early 1930s to eradicate legalized racial discrimination. This book lays out a long-term litigation strategy designed to overturn the cases that have undermined the NLRA and frustrated its policies. As with the NAACP, this strategy must take place in a context of activism to promote the NLRA policies of social and industrial democracy, solidarity, justice, and worker empowerment. Dannin contends that only by promoting these core purposes of the NLRA can unions survive—and even thrive.

This book comprehensively explores and critiques how the current U.S. Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice John Roberts, has reshaped First Amendment law. It argues that this Court has consistently used First Amendment law to promote a limited view of freedom, while bolstering social and political stability. This book examines every decision about expressive freedom the Supreme Court handed down between Chief Justice Roberts' ascent in September 2005 and Justice Scalia's death in February 2016. During Chief Justice Roberts' tenure, the Court has issued more than forty decisions that interpret the First Amendment's speech protections. These decisions comprise one of the most important parts of this Court's record and legacy while inspiring sharply divergent judgments. The author explores many of the key recurring debates in First Amendment law as well as providing much needed attention on the special problems of the government preserve cases and the high stakes of the electoral process cases.
