The Catholic liturgical calendar is filled with feasts and celebrations that may or may not fall on Sundays. In this book, Fr Henry Martins (OSA) prepares his homilies for the Year cycle (B) with homilies for feasts that occur each year. in this modern era, it is not enough simply to read and understand what the daily readings mean . Our challenge and aim is to find out what they mean in our time and in this present context. Speaking the Word in our time and for our places is the challenge of preaching and, in this Book, Fr Henry offers his considered reflections on what that task requires. The texts of these homilies can be used for the many special feasts of the year by not only preachers when preparing their homilies. but also they are made available here in this book for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of the Sunday and feast day readings of the mass or find material for fruitful prayers and meditations .

These introductions, homilies, reflections, and prayers are not theory, but a priest's experience of a liturgical approach that works. The testimony of the faithful who say, "what a lovely mass..what a moving homily, could I have a copy?", is his touchstone. So is the popularity of the homilies on his internet, web, "A Priest Reflects". This book works because it treats each Sunday liturgy as a seamless robe of rich interwoven themes. Thus, the introduction identifies the links between the Old Testament reading and the Gospel, and adds any gems from the second reading. Then, when the scripture is read, people, clued in to the overall import, listen more profitably. The homily elaborates the key themes from the readings further, and relates them to life, with stories, anecdotes, newspaper headlines, references to common events etc. The aim is that the Word should light up our contemporary experience.. The final doxology reinforces the point that the Word is life for this world, not just the next; The creed introduction summarizes the whole, and the prayers carry that on into petitions for church leaders, civil authorities, youth, the sick, the dead, and special needs. There are special prayers for our youth, that gaps in our congregations there will be bridged. And the presiding minister should add other topical issues of the day. The reflection after holy communion again reinforces the overall message, but also leaves the people of God with something spicy and memorable to take home. So, all in all, this book should light up our masses, or services, and make them gospel based, relevant, inspirational, and focused.. The homilies are timed at about five minutes, people's normal attention span. So don't miss out on this innovative book. Buy it, and it will light up your Sunday mass, and provide spiritual food for the following week.

‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away’ (Luke 21:33) At the weekday Eucharist we read from sections of all four gospels in the course of the liturgical year. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2021/22, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weeks of the calendar year, beginning on the 29th November, Monday of the first week of Advent. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the Scripture passages on their own terms, while showing how they can continue to speak to our church and our world today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer for people of faith. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day to their parishioners. In parishes where, from time to time, there is a Liturgy of the Word in place of Mass, the Minister of the Word might read the corresponding reflection after the gospel reading. On most week days, the same readings are proclaimed in the church throughout the world in the setting of the Eucharist. To read and reflect upon the readings for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church.

It is not only the Catholics who attend Sunday Mass, but also the priests who preach at Mass who feel overwhelmed by the three scripture readings in which for the most part only the first from the Old Testament and the third from the Gospel have any interconnection, while the second from the apostolic letters stands by itself. This book seeks to present the common theses that connect all three of the readings for Sundays and feasts of the Lord in the three year cycle of readings. The reflections here are meant to be theological and spiritual suggestions that the one who is preaching can develop further and from which he can select individual perspectives. Rather than seeking immediately concrete applications, Fr. von Balthasar attempts to elucidate the content which is immediately present in the passages. Organized by each Sunday and feast day of the liturgical year for years A, B, & C, these reflections are meant to be theological and spiritual suggestions that the one who is preaching can develop further and from which he can select individual perspectives.

Some days words come easily to us, and insights seem to spring up from some secret sanctuary to surprise and delight, leaving us wondering at hidden resources within. On other days we feel lost for words, with insights buried under a mountain of routine concerns. We all need help on dull days when reserves are low and this volume has been assembled not as a substitute for your best thinking, but as a humble help for those days when you feel a bit weary and out of inspiration. It aims to provide a line, an image, a thought--a trigger to set the mind in movement toward the Gospel. Since 1973, Redemptorist Publications have produced the quarterly publication "The Living Word" as a resource for those who preach and lead the liturgy. At the heart of this publication are the homily reflections written for each Sunday and feast day. One of the strengths of these throughout the years is that they have been written by a variety of people--priests, religious, and lay--from a wide range of different backgrounds and with a diversity of pastoral and personal experience. In this volume, covering each of the Sundays and solemnities in the three-year cycle of the Catholic Lectionary, we have brought together a selection of homilies and reflections on the scriptures from "The Living Word." We hope that it will be helpful to those preparing homilies and those who simply want to explore and reflect on the scriptures. "Paperback"
