Excerpt from History of the Indians of Connecticut: From the Earliest Known Period to 1850 This work having been submitted in manuscript to the Historical Society of Connecticut, for their scrutiny and sanction, it was referred by the Society in February last, to a Committee consisting of Prof. James L. Kingsley, Rev. Leonard Bacon and Mr. Edward C. Herrick. At a meeting held September 3d, 1850, the Committee presented the following report, and the recommendations therein contained were adopted by the Society. The Committee appointed February 5th, 1850, by the Connecticut Historical Society, to examine a manuscript history of the Indian tribes of Connecticut, prepared by Mr. John W. De Forest, and to give an opinion whether it should be published under the patronage of the Society, would respectfully report: That they have read the manuscript referred to, with as much attention as time and circumstances would allow, and find in it abundant evidence of labor and research, and a collection of facts which they think highly important for a full elucidation of the history of the State. They have not thought it necessary to look at the authorities on which Mr. De Forest relies for his statements, as it is understood that he wishes to be considered alone responsible for the facts and opinions detailed in his work. The Committee recommend that the Society should encourage Mr. De Forest's undertaking, and permit his work to be published under their patronage.
