Excerpt from History of the Church of England From 1660 English Church from the restoration of the monarchy and the passing of the Act of Uniformity down to a period which most of us remember, and at which all the chief questions that now agitate the Church had already come into distinct prominence, and might be regarded as burning. I was not made aware of the existence of the very elaborate essays of Abbey and Overton, until a great part of this book was already in type, and consequently it was altogether out of my power to make any more than mere verbal alterations. I will, therefore, content myself with remarking that their work is of a different character from mine, and intended for a different class of readers. Excerpt from The Church and the Puritans: 1570 1660 The history of the Reformed Church of England between the years 1570 and 1660 is too often treated as if it were but the history of a Government department of education and morals. The close connexion which undoubtedly existed between Church and State under the Tudors and the Stuarts has tended to obscure the fact, that during those years within the bosom of the Church itself was being worked out, independently of the Government, a problem which was essentially religious in its nature, and which only affected politics when men felt bound to put their principles into practice and try to enforce them upon others. That problem was no less than whether England as a nation should or should not cut itself off from historical Christianity, from the principles of Christianity as they had been understood for sixteen centuries; or, in other words, whether Puritanism should or should not succeed in establishing itself as legitimately within the pale of the English Church. Excerpt from A History of the English Church, Vol. 2 of 2: During the Civil Wars and Under the Commonwealth, 1640-1660 On the 23rd of May, 1646, the Long Parliament had consented to a compromise with the clergy. For the scheme of County Commissioners, to control action of presbyteries in cases of unenumerated scandals, a central single standing Parliamentary Committee was appointed. To the Presbyterian spirit it was by far the less of two evils; and, making up their minds to the situation, the clergy accepted the compromise, and decided to act in the long delayed setting up of the Government. Hardly more than a fortnight later, the House passed an order requesting all the ministers in the parishes of London and the Classes of the Inns of Court and Sergeants Inns forthwith to put in execution the ordinance concerning Church government. Excerpt from A History of the English Church, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Civil Wars and Under the Commonwealth; 1640-1660 The scope of this work is intentionally restricted. It is not a history of religion in England during the years 1640-60. It is therefore not concerned either with the history of Dogma or with that of the Sects or of the three Denominations. The history of the Congregationalists as such, or of the Baptists as such, or of the Presbyterians as such, or of the Quakers as such, or of any of the Sects as such, must be sought in the separate histories of those bodies. The bearing of the present work is quite different. The years 1640-60 witnessed the most complete and drastic revolution which the Church of England has ever undergone. Its whole structure was ruthlessly demolished - Episcopacy, the Spiritual Courts, Deans and Chapters, Convocation, the Book of Common Prayer, the Thirty-nine Articles, and the Psalter; the lands of the Bishops and of the Deans and Chapters were sold, and the Cathedrals were purified or defiled. On the clean-swept ground an entirely novel Church system was erected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
