Excerpt from History of Rome and the Popes in the Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The Emperors succeeding Constantine at once recognised the fundamental difference between the Church's spiritual sphere of action and the temporal power of the State. The whole period was permeated with the idea, formulated by hundreds of writers in antiquity, that the Church, founded solely for the spiritual salvation of mankind, pursues an object totally different from that of the State; that her existence is sustained by means of a different character, and that she reckons on other and superior forces to enable her to accomplish her task within the minds and hearts Of believers. Excerpt from History of Rome and the Popes in the Middle Ages, Vol. 3 Such was the growth Of monasticism in the Church, that the tree spread its manifold branches over Italy, North Africa, and Spain; over the ancient Provinces Of the Roman Empire in the North, and over the newly founded States, even as far as Britain and Ireland. In the Sixth century, in the monastery Of Bangor, on the east coast Of Ireland, three thousand monks, supporting them selves by manual labour, and, divided into seven choirs, kept up day and night an unceasing service Of song. In Gaul, in the beginning Of the fifth century, according to Sulpicius Severus, a contemporary, no less than two thousand monks assembled for the funeral Of the great founder Of monasteries, St. Martin Of Tours. In Spain, St. Martin Of Bracara (braga), who worked among the Suevi of Galleccia, took as his example the monastic and apostolic ministry Of his namesake Of Tours. Excerpt from The History of the Popes, Vol. 1: From the Close of the Middle Ages; Drawn From the Secret Archives of the Vatican and Other Original Sources The publication of a new History of the Popes from the Conclusion of the Middle Ages, drawn from original sources, cannot be considered a superfluous task. Apart from the Special interest attaching to the annals of this the most ancient and still most vigorous of dynasties, from a purely scientific point of view, a new work embodying the substance Of the numerous monographs of the last ten years, with additions and corrections from fresh original documents, seems urgently called for. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 1 The history of many of the later popes has indeed been well treated of by Ranke, whose work has long been before the English public. In more recent years Creighton has written on the Popes of the Reformation Period, and still more recently has the history of the popes from the fifteenth century onwards been most admirably and fully penned by Dr. L. Pastor, whose splendid biographies of the Popes of the later Middle Ages are now being published in an English translation by Kegan Paul co. Excerpt from History the City of Rome, Vol. 1: In the Middle Ages Germany, of the appearance of which I was in the beginning unaware, obliged me to go over a great part of the book a second time. But the pleasure that the work afforded, and the delight of living in thought at least again in Rome - which, in spite of all the changes of recent years, exercises over me a fascination little less than it exercised over the pilgrims of the Middle Ages - made me regardless of hindrances, and over came every consideration. It is only now, while watching the progress of these volumes through the press, that a sense of my presumption in undertaking so ambitious a task has come home to me. In justice to myself, however, I must remind the reader that Gregorovius's History has been allowed to remain untranslated and practically unknown in England for more than thirty years; and, judging from the nature and length of the work, it seemed little likely any accomplished scholar, such as those who have given us Curtius or Mommsen, would come forward to give us the City of Rome in the Middle Ages. Two quali fications for the task also I at least possessed command of the necessary leisure, and an intense interest in the subject dealt with. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 4 IF edification were the sole, or even the principal, object which I had in view in undertaking to write the biographies of the Popes of the early Middle Ages, I might perhaps have hesitated about publishing the present series. But I wish to pursue a higher end than that of indulging in a style of historical writing which is supposed to be calculated to edify a certain type of mind. I would fulfil what I regard as a command laid upon me by the late glorious Head of the Church, and strive to make known the history of the Popes of Rome. And, as it was a cardinal maxim with Leo XIII. That truth would not injure the Church, I am convinced that he would not have had the Lives of some Popes written and the Lives of others left unrecorded, nor would he have wished to see some of their deeds blazoned forth and others buried in eternal oblivion.
