Excerpt from The Story of Saint Joseph for Children When the suitors had all asked the high priest for the hand of the Blessed Virgin, he prayed for a sign from Heaven, to know which to choose. Mary prayed very hard. Suddenly the staff that St. Joseph carried in his hand blossomed into lilies. This was a sign to Mary that he, as she, had promised God he would always be a virgin. SO she was very happy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Admirable Life of the Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph Termed by the Rev} P. Laurent, in the in duction to the life of this servant of God, there were many things appertaining to the glorious St. Joseph. Influenced by the advice of men whose counsels we regard as commands, we have extracted, neither altering nor modifying any thing, all that is contained in the citfi mys tique regarding St. Joseph, and have formed from it the volume which we now publish, add ing nothing to the text of the servant of God, that the book may not be deprived of the ap probations with which it is invested, nor of the grace that was attached to the words written under the dictation of the august Mary. Excerpt from St. Josephs Collegian, Vol. 25: March 1937 Religion with him was a matter of ever-present obligation. He was a devout and Sincere Catholic, charitable beyond expectation. He was the friend of the friendless, as his annual donations for more than a quarter of a century to a Catholic Orphan Asylum and various other charitable institutions irrespective of creed attest. The memorial altar in St. Patrick's Cathedral, the bell in its chimes, and the baptistery in the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, are among the yet vis ible proofs of his generous spirit. Excerpt from Saint Joseph of Jesus and Mary: Priedieu Papers in His Praise I have found it very hard to choose a name for this new book about St. Joseph, and the name chosen at last needs an excuse. It was suggested by a story that is told of one of his most devoted clients, whose greatest glory is perhaps the part she has had in promoting the glory of St. Joseph. Our Lord, it is said, appeared one day to St. Teresa in the form of a child, and asked her name. "I call myself Teresa of Jesus." "And I," said the Divine Child, "call Myself Jesus of Teresa" Copying this model, I have dared to call the subject of this book St. Joseph of Jesus and Mary. My title-page goes on to describe the book as made up of "priedieu papers" about St Joseph. Some of them have appeared in The Irish Monthly, in the series of short and simple essays on spiritual subjects to which that name is given in the magazine - a name taken from the French word for genuflexorium or praying-stool. Excerpt from The Life and Glories of St. Joseph: Husband of Mary, Foster-Father of Jesus, and Patron of the Universal Church Finally, observations and reflections have been introduced as occasion offered which were suggested by various authors whose works have been consulted, or which occurred to the writer's own mind from consideration of the materials before him. It is no uncommon idea, even among Catholics, that the devotion paid to St. Joseph and the lofty estimate of his prerogatives now prevailing in the Church are innovations of comparatively modern date, and that they have no precedent or sanction in antiquity. But this is far from being the case. In the writings of the ancient Fathers are to be found, not only what' may be called prolific germs, but also positive and explicit statements of doc trine, which sufficiently Show how deep in the con sciousness of the Church lay the belief of Joseph's exalted dignity and sanctity, and how definite a shape it had assumed even in the early ages. The devotion paid to him has, it is true, been much more distinctly formulated in later centuries, when his place in the celestial hierarchy came to. Be more fully recognised; but from the first this great Saint had a peculiar attraction for many holy and gifted Souls, who regarded him with singular veneration. And affection, as the citations given abundantly testify. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Legends of Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church The Legends of St. Joseph, here given to the public, have been gathered by the reve rend compiler from many sources. They all partake, more or less, of the legendary charac ter, in so far as the manner of relating goes, although several are strictly and historically true, and taken from the archives of cities or religious houses. Some, like The Rod in Blossom, The Shepherds of Bethlehem, The First Christmas Night, and a few others, are in strict conformity with the Scrip tural narrative while others are more or less embellished by the pious fancies of the faith ful, - filling up, as it were, in process of time, the somewhat meagre details of gospel and ecclesiastical history. Some, again, are well authenticated facts of quite recent occur rence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
