Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the American Sunday-School Union and of Its Contributions to Popular Education in the United States, 1865 The system of rewards had been in vogue long before the organization of the American Sunday School Union. Indeed, in Mr. Raikes' schools, gratuities were given for attendance and good be haviour. But we do notfind the ticket-currency, as it might be called, (that is, tickets of various values, redeemable with books, ) was. In use, ex cept in our own country. Scripture tickets were given in British Sunday-schools, * as marks of ap probation, and eight such tickets, received in the month, entitled the recipient to a copy of a Penny Monthly Magazine. But the system here was more complicated. A text of Scripture, printed on a card, with blue ink, was given as a reward for attendance all day, and good conduct; or for every thirty verses of hymns or Scripture recited. This engrossing book traces the social history of Protestant Sunday schools from their origins in the 1790s--when they taught literacy to poor working children--to their consolidation in the 1870s, when they had become the primary source of new church members for the major Protestant denominations. Anne M. Boylan describes not only the schools themselves but also their place within a national network of evangelical institutions, their complementary relationship to local common schools, and their connection with the changing history of youth and women in the nineteenth century. Her book is a signal contribution to our understanding of American religious and social history, education history, women's history, and the history of childhood.
