Excerpt from Brown University Historical Catalogue, 1764-1904 In 1762 the Philadelphia Baptist Association, in view of the disabilities attaching to Baptist students in most of the existing American colleges, welcomed a proposal offered by the Rev. Morgan Edwards, a clergyman of Welsh birth, at that time pastor of the First Baptist Church in Philadelphia, to found in Rhode Island a college that Should be under the control of their own denomination. James Manning, who had just been graduated from Princeton, was appointed by the Association as its agent to establish a seminary of polite literature subject to the government of the Baptists.
