The present volume, covers the physical characteristics and spectral data of 971 diterpenoid and steroidal alkaloids reported until the end of 1988. The compounds are arranged according to their chemical structures in various subclasses, and within each subclass they are arranged in order of increasing molecular weight. The UV, IR, 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR and MS spectral data are given in descending orders of magnitude. All egr; values in the UV spectra have been converted to log egr;. The chemical shifts in the 1 H-NMR spectral data are presented in ppm and the chemical shifts in older data published in tgr; values have been converted to dgr; values to ensure uniformity of format. Data are also presented, where available, on simple derivatives of the alkaloids. CAS Registry Numbers are also given. The book is thoroughly indexed, containing a compound index, molecular weight index, molecular formula index, compound type index and plant source index, which should greatly facilitate the task of the reader in searching for individual compounds. A section describing the numbering system concludes the volume.Being the first comprehensive book on natural products which presents the actual spectral data rather than just references to the data, this book should prove of great benefit to organic chemists, natural product chemists, medicinal chemists and pharmacologists.

Isoquinoline alkaloids represent one of the two largest groups of alkaloids, the other being indole alkaloids. The present volume, which is the third of this series, describes the spectral data of about 700 isoquinoline alkaloids and covers the literature up to 1992. The spectral data of the remaining classes of isoquinoline alkaloids will be published in another volume within a year. The compounds are arranged according to their structural types in various subclasses. Within each subclass they are arranged in order of increasing molecular weight. Compounds in the same subclass and having the same molecular weight are arranged in order of increasing carbon number. The UV, IR, 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR spectral data are given in descending orders of magnitude. All &egr values in the UV spectra have been converted to log &egr. The chemical shifts in the 1 H-NMR spectral data are presented in ppm and the chemical shifts in the older data published in &tgr values have been converted to &dgr values to ensure uniformity of format. The protons and carbons to which the data refers have been italicised. If any of the data given is that of a salt (e.g. hydrochloride) then this is indicated in brackets before the data. If the compounds are known by more than one name, the older names are given in brackets after the newer one. Spectral data of simple derivatives of compounds are also reported, but only if the data for acetyl, benzoyl, methyl and ethyl derivatives are given. The numbering systems used are given both at the beginning of each sub-class as well as at the end of the book. Compound, molecular formula, molecular weight, plant sources and compound-type indices are also included which should enhance the utility of the book.

A vast array of natural organic compounds, the products of primary and secondary metabolism, occur in plants. This dictionary provides basic information, including structural formulae, on plant constituents. It profiles over 3000 substances from phenolics and alkaloids through carbohydrates and plant glycosides to oils and triterpenoids. For each substance, the author presents the trivial name, synonyms, structural type, chemical structure showing stereochemistry, molecular weight and formula, natural occurrence, biological activity and commercial or other use. Key references are provided for each class and subclass.

Acronycine, a potent antitumor agent, was discovered in the bark of the small Australian Rutaceous tree, Acronychia baueri Schott. This new work presents a comprehensive survey of the isolation, structure determination, methods of synthesis, and the biological properties of acronycine, as well as an account of natural and synthetic analogues of acronycine, and their biological properties.Solanum alkaloids were reviewed in 1990 and this book surveys the new developments (isolation procedures, structural elucidation methods) and critically updates earlier reviews. In addition it presents the interesting chemistry and synthesis of cyclopeptide alkaloids. These cyclopeptide alkaloids have been isolated from ascidians, sea hares, and cyanobacteria. Also included are reviews of the use of the functionalized lactam, pyroglutamic acid, as a chiral template for the synthesis of alkaloids. The second review examines the on-line coupling of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and mass spectrometry (MS) for the analysis of alkaloid mixtures. Finally a review of oxygenated analogs of the alkaloid Marcfortine for their potent antiparasitic activity is included at the end of this work. Each chapter in this volume has been reviewed by at least one expert in the field. Indexes for both subjects and organisms are provided.
