Excerpt from Growth, Mortality, and Regeneration After Cutting in Loblolly Pine Pulpwood Stands Good forest management policy today would not accept the rather crude short-rotation cutting methods as practiced in this early study. New methods of seed-tree selection and stimulation, seedbed preparation, and control of inferior understory species are some of the techniques considered advisable to secure satisfactory regeneration. However, there are large acreages of loblolly pine stands not under intensive management which are still being cut by some of the methods practiced in this study. The records of growth, mortality, and regeneration during the 9-year period following cutting by the six methods tested provide some useful information regarding these stands. Excerpt from The Relation of Growth to Stand Density in Natural Loblolly Pine Stands: 5-Year Results No curves were apparent in this study. This failure to show optimum densities may have been due to the limited range of densities sampled. To correct this condition, additional plots were thinned at the beginning of the second 5-year period, extending the range of residual densities to a very low level. With a wider range of residual densities, the chance of determining the optimum level should be much better. "Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."

Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.
