The Author has condensed virtually everything that is known about the great white sharks that are preserved in European museums in this book. Available data of 105 great white sharks from 45 institutions is presented herein. Most material consists of taxidermied specimens and jaws. Most specimens with known capture locations come from the Mediterranean Sea. The majority of specimens are very old. The jaws belonging to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, dated from at least 1640-1660, are the oldest white shark material preserved in Europe. The largest specimens of which parts are preserved in any European museum may be those of which skeletal parts are preserved in the Museo di Anatomia Comparata of Rome, Italy, and the Museo Zoologico "La Specola" of Florence, Italy. The cast of a 5.65 m female great white shark preserved in the Musée cantonal de Zoologie of Lausanne, is the world’s largest that has been reconstructed directly from a whole specimen. The largest skin-mounted specimen is a 5.22 m female preserved in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Trieste. The 1.50 m female preserved in the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum of Frankfurt is the smallest taxidermied white shark preserved in Europe. The publication also includes a concise general account of white shark evolution, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, feeding, attacks on humans and fishery. Up-to-date literature references are included. Extensively researched, this encyclopedic account is enhanced by many photographs and drawings, that bring to life the extraordinary world of the great white shark. The ease of reading of the book and its thoroughness will make it a welcomed addition to any naturalist's library.

In 1996, the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank began collecting and recording encounters in the Mediterranean between great white sharks and boats, bathers, divers, fishermen and others, from the Middle Ages to the present. This meticulously researched work presents the study's findings for the first time, releasing a trove of information on the great white's size, distribution, habitat, behavior, reproduction, diet, fisheries and attacks on humans. With 596 records of great white sharks from the entire Mediterranean Sea, this volume represents the most complete and comprehensive study on the species in that region and constitutes a rich resource for historians, scientists, fishermen, and divers.

When the shark's white belly was opened, a headless body was found. The headless man was a soldier. In 1543, the French physician Guillaume Rondelet described a shark of enormous size. The shark was described under the name Lamia. The enormous fish was caught off the coast of Marseille, France. The mouth turned out to be filled with saw-edged triangular teeth, large as knives but white as ivory. Over 400 years later, the great white shark would be described as the "man-eater," a killing machine hunting for human flesh along the world's beaches. The world's largest white shark was caught in 1956 in the Mediterranean off the French Riviera. This shark is now preserved and has a body length of 5.9 meters (19 feet). The weight was 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds). This is a massive white shark. The white shark is the world's largest predatory fish. Its meter-wide jaws allow the white shark to swallow almost anything. Despite millions of people annually being in the white shark's habitat worldwide, very few shark attacks occur. When shark attacks do happen, they often receive significant attention. Few know how to avoid an attack from a white shark. In this book, we learn how, where, and when the white shark attacks and what you can do to fend off a white shark. The white shark is a natural part of the Mediterranean. A native population exists in the Mediterranean that genetically distinguishes itself from other white shark populations worldwide. It is unknown how many white sharks are in the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, some of the world's largest white sharks have been caught off the beaches of Mallorca. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the white shark was common in the Mediterranean. It was abundant enough to be harpooned for its meat. The world's first shark nets were installed in Croatia to prevent white sharks from attacking humans. The great white shark has often been portrayed as a stereotype for all sharks. Depictions where the white shark is portrayed as a killing machine are far from the truth. Here, light is shed on the white shark's bad reputation. Misconceptions that still exist are clarified and fought with factual evidence. Embark on an exhilarating journey alongside marine biologist David C. Bernvi, as his research on white sharks unveils the hidden depths of the world's mightiest predatory fish, Carcharodon carcharias. Prepare to be captivated by the extraordinary story that traces back to where it all began.[Bokinfo].

"Social criticism at its scorching-hot best."--Barbara Ehrenreich "Think H.L. Mencken crossed with Jon Stewart."--The Phoenix In Rich People Things, Chris Lehmann lays bare the various dogmas and delusions that prop up plutocratic rule in the post-meltdown age. It's a humorous and harrowing tale of warped populism, phony reform, and blind deference to the nation's financial elite. As the author explains, American class privilege is very much like the idea of sex in a Catholic school--it's not supposed to exist in the first place, but once it presents itself in your mind's eye, you realize that it's everywhere. A concise and easy-to-use guide, Rich People Things catalogs the fortifications that shelter the opulent from the resentments of the hoi polloi. From ideological stanchions such as the Free Market through the castellation of media including The New York Times and Wired magazine, to gatekeepers such as David Brooks, Steve Forbes, and Alan Greenspan, Lehmann covers the vast array of comforting and comprehensive protections that allow the über-privileged to maintain their iron grip on almost half of America's wealth. With chapters on Malcolm Gladwell, the Supreme Court, the memoir, and more, no one is spared from Lehmann's pointed prose. Chris Lehmann is employed, ever precariously, as an editor for Yahoo! News, Bookforum, and The Baffler, while dissecting the excesses of his social betters for his column Rich People Things at TheAwl.com. He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife Ana Marie Cox and a quartet of excellent pets.

Advancements in science and engineering have occurred at a surprisingly rapid pace since the release of the seventh edition of this encyclopedia. Large portions of the reference have required comprehensive rewriting and new illustrations. Scores of new topics have been included to create this thoroughly updated eighth edition. The appearance of this new edition in 1994 marks the continuation of a tradition commenced well over a half-century ago in 1938 Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia, First Edition, was published and welcomed by educators worldwide at a time when what we know today as modern science was just getting underway. The early encyclopedia was well received by students and educators alike during a critical time span when science became established as a major factor in shaping the progress and economy of individual nations and at the global level. A vital need existed for a permanent science reference that could be updated periodically and made conveniently available to audiences that numbered in the millions. The pioneering VNSE met these criteria and continues today as a reliable technical information source for making private and public decisions that present a backdrop of technical alternatives.
