Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, University of Cape Coast (GRADUATE STUDIES DEPARTMENT), course: MASTER OF ARTS, ENGLISH, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to answer the following questions: What is the nature of Ghanaian English as a regional dialect? And how is Ghanaian English different from British English? "The Dynamic Model of the evolution of New Englishes" by Schnelder categorises Ghanaian English within the Outer Circle variety spoken in Britain’s former Gold Coast colony in West Africa. It concludes the debate of whether there is what is called Ghanaian English at all, citing other varieties in different part of the world as a backing. This work examines the extent to which Ghanaian English is truly Ghanaian, its uniqueness that characterizes it as a variety of English in terms of pronunciation, register and syntax. Statement of the Problem. Scholars and educated elites who have passed through the English medium education sometimes argue over the type of English spoken in Ghana as ungrammatical. Because of that it is not easy to condemn or criticize Ghanaian English as bad or wrong since it has moved far away from the colonial English that gave birth to it. Others even think it should not be considered English. The main aim of this study is to examine the extend of growth and deviation of GhE away from its origin in terms of register, semantics, phonetics among others. It also aims at finding out if in the midst of this variation, it could be considered English at all. In other words, it identifies the concept and characteristic of language variety, in this case, variety of English.

World Englishes is a vibrant research field that has attracted scholars from many different linguistic subdisciplines. Emphasizing the common ground of all research on World Englishes, the 22 articles in this collected volume, selected from more than a hundred papers presented at the 2007 conference of the International Association for World Englishes in Regensburg, cover a broad range of topics which together reflect the state of the art of research in this field. The volume focuses on regions as diverse as Africa, the Caribbean, the Antipodes and Asia, but also promotes a globally comparative perspective by analyzing selected characteristics of the English language across a wide range of varieties. Methodologically, a number of different approaches are applied, including corpus linguistic studies, socio-phonetics as well as historical discourse analysis. Due to its wide scope, the book is of interest not only to World Englishes scholars but also to sociolinguists as well as applied, contact or corpus linguists.

Most books on pronunciation teaching deal extensively with methodology, while giving insufficient attention to the prior questions of the model being used. This book discusses the what rather than the how. It examines critically the kinds of pronunciation model in use in ELT, in particular the Received Pronunciation accent, and shows that they are unsatisfactory in several respects. Various criteria for models are investigated, especially the concepts of intelligibility, identity, and functional load. The importance of features of the phonological system of English is assessed against these criteria, so that priorities are established for pronunciation models. This book is important reading for English language teachers, applied linguists, ELT textbook writers, language planners, speech therapists, and anyone involved in the instruction of the spoken form of English.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 15, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, course: English in Africa, language: English, abstract: Language attitudes are the feelings people have about their own language or the language(s) of others. Daily, we tend to form our opinions about others from the way they speak. Our attitudes to different varieties of a language colour the way we perceive the individuals that use those varieties. In the Ghanaian society, there are basically two distinct varieties of English besides the standard Received Pronunciation (RP) and American English; these are the Standard Ghanaian English and GhaPE. The social distinction for the users of these varieties has for a long time been educational status. Whereas StGhaE was associated with the educated, the non- standard, GhaPE was associated with the uneducated class of the society, who were often seen as a class that struggled to express themselves in English against all odds. Observing the Ghanaian society today, there seem to be a gradual attitudinal change especially among students in the second cycle and tertiary institutions towards the perceived non-standard of English, Pidgin. Pidgin English has been seen as a preserve of the uneducated and frowned upon by the schooled class. Recent development, however, shows the active use of a variety of Pidgin among students in Ghana. Huber terms it as an educated variety of Pidgin1 which he distinguishes from the uneducated variety, while Dako (2002) calls it Student Pidgin.
