For more than nine decades, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has been responsible for setting up, monitoring, and implementing international labour standards in order to ensure that workers around the globe enjoy minimum social protection and workers' rights. Lars Thomann examines the ILO's wide ranging efforts to achieve compliance with international labour standards adopted by the organization and ratified by its member states. The author draws on different compliance schools of various strands of international relations theory and discusses them against the background of the ILO's compliance efforts in general and regarding the abolition of forced labour in particular. He shows that even though the ILO has experience in bringing about compliance – given its seniority – and is in many cases successful in doing so, it is not well equipped to deal with persistent cases of non-compliance. The book is valuable reading for researchers and students in the field of social sciences, as well as for practitioners working on international labour standards.

Already in its sixth year of existence, this "Documentary Yearbook" provides you with the only independent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by international organizations. The "Yearbook" is arranged systematically and thereby gives the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea much improved access to essential documentation. Like the previous volumes, the 1990 volume focuses on the United Nations family of international organizations and on several non-UN intergovernmental organizations of developing states. The most important documents which were issued in the course of 1990 are reproduced (in whole or in part), while other relevant documents are listed. An extensive index of Keywords facilitates access by the reader to the complex and often interrelated matters dealt with by various organizations as well as to the information concerning individual states, regions and international instruments.

Shipboard Management supports students undertaking qualification at all stages of maritime training, enhancing and developing knowledge and understanding of the key issues in the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997, as subsequently amended by the 2015 Regulations and other legislation. Informed by real-world experience of commercial shipboard operations, Shipboard Management offers an essential study guide addressing the issues which are most frequently confronted in the context of ship management. It is designed to foster the ability to analyse and apply the dynamics of the legal and operational structures in which the shipboard management team must engage in merchant vessel operations. Students will progress through increasingly difficult levels of learning activity in order to develop problem-solving abilities. The text focuses on the application of skills and techniques that are fundamental to commercial shipping and that meet the demands of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Regulations. This will be essential reading for all students and candidates on MCA-accredited Deck training courses, and for seafarers wishing to apply for Certificates of Equivalent Competency. It is also a key reference for professionals in ship-owning and management companies, and for maritime lawyers.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), as the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the regulation of shipping engaged in international trade from the points of view of maritime safety and the prevention and control of pol- tion by ships, recognizes that these goals can only be effectively achieved if each and every link in the corresponding chain of responsibility meets fully its obli- tions. Flag, port and coastal States, as well as the shipping industry itself, all have roles to play in collectively improving safety and protecting the environment, both marine and atmospheric, through the development, adoption, and uniform imp- mentation and enforcement of, global standards. In this book, Dr. Christodoulou-Varotsi sets out to explore the extent to which the actions of the European Union and the United States, as the main originators of high standards in these fields, constitute a paradigm to the rest of the inter- tional maritime community. In this regard, while underscoring the need for a - listic, multilateral approach to maritime regulation – as epitomized by the work of IMO – the author explores how standards could be enhanced through the use of unilateral action.
