The second edition of this book is intended as a definitive text on biliary tract and gallbladder cancers. Specifically, it will serve as a single-source reference on the current knowledge base for the multidisciplinary management of such cancers and thus covers epidemiological, surgical, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy approaches. A key feature is the demonstration of the impact of cutting-edge technical knowledge on treatment; for example, interventional radiology techniques, novel surgical approaches, and image-guided radiation therapy are all extensively discussed. Diagnosis is also considered in detail, with coverage of novel serum biomarkers, pathologic staging, molecular profiling, and the full range of current and emerging imaging strategies. This book will be an invaluable source of information on new techniques for experienced practitioners, yet is sufficiently concise to offer an introduction to the field for students and community practitioners.

This book covers various aspects of gall bladder cancer, e.g. its epidemiology, etiology, pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, investigations, staging, management, prevention, etc. Gall bladder cancer is the most common form of biliary tract cancer worldwide, there are peculiar geographical variations in its incidence; while it is rare in the developed west (North America and Western Europe), high incidence rates are reported from Central and South America, Central and Eastern Europe, East Asia (Japan and Korea) and northern India. In addition, the book addresses a number of related issues including thick walled gall bladder, gall bladder cancer with surgical obstructive jaundice, incidental gall bladder cancer, the role and place of common bile duct excision, the Japanese aggressive surgical approach, management of asymptomatic gall stones, etc. An authoritative work that provides detailed insights into various aspects of gall bladder cancer and its management, the book offers a valuable resource for physicians in high-incidence areas and low-incidence areas alike. It is richly illustrated throughout with radiographs (US, CT, MRI, etc.) and operative and specimen photos.

The book discusses the recent progress in understanding the therapeutic targets for gallbladder cancer to provide opportunities for research and for developing innovative strategies that may enhance the benefit of conventional chemotherapy. The book focuses on identifying candidate molecules and the overall status of the targeted therapies available for gallbladder cancer, as there is an urgent need to discover new molecular targets that can guide the emergence of new treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes and act as biomarkers for the early detection of diseases. Recently, new treatment therapeutics targets for gallbladder cancer patients have been identified and the field is evolving rapidly. The book is relevant for the clinical researcher, surgeon, scientist and academician.

Biliary Tract and Gallbladder Cancer: Diagnosis and Therapy is a comprehensive and definitive discussion of all aspects of the treatment of malignant tumors of the gallbladder and biliary tract. This is the first book to examine these cancers in such depth, as rapid advances in surgical oncology and radiotherapeutic approaches have demanded the full coverage this text provides. The book progresses logically, with early chapters presenting the epidemiologic, pathologic, and pathogenetic characteristics of BT and GB lesions, followed by excellent discussions of clinical and radiologic diagnosis and staging. Finally, the full arsenal of therapeutic approaches is presented, from the local to systemic, established to experimental. Segments throughout detail the most current cutting-edge therapies, making the latest information readily available across a number of subdisciplines. Features of this unique textbook include: An exclusive and comprehensive focus on neoplasms of the gallbladder and biliary tract A multidisciplinary focus, with contributions from medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, pathology, and imaging, and a clear emphasis on team-based approaches to oncologic care The latest clinical research and treatment discussions from international experts Biliary Tract and Gallbladder Cancer serves as the single-source knowledge base for multidisciplinary biliary tract cancer management. It is comprehensive enough to demonstrate new treatments of biliary tract cancer to experienced practitioners, yet concise enough to serve as an introduction to novices in the field.

Gallbladder cancer is characterised by delayed diagnosis, ineffective treatment and poor prognosis. Surgical resection is considered the treatment of choice for radical therapy (cure), however only a minority have early (stage I) gallbladder cancer, usually found incidentally during cholecystectomy. The role of other adjutant radical or palliative therapies in gallbladder cancer has not been fully clarified in the literature. Chemotherapy is experimental and is not very helpful, while the role of radiotherapy is controversial. It appears that gallbladder carcinomas are not as radio-resistant as was formerly thought. In the majority of cases radiotherapy has a palliative role and occasionally plays an important function in the cure of the disease in combination with complete surgical resection. This book gathers significant new research on the subject of gallbladder cancer.

Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is a radical new surgical procedure developed in Japan to treat patients with biliary tract carcinoma. The development and clinical application of HPD have been made possible through research conducted primarily by Japanese investigators on common routes of the spread of biliary tract carcinoma. Still regarded as a radical procedure because of its technical difficulty and possible complications, HPD is not yet widely practiced anywhere in the world. The authors of this volume, who are pioneers in the field, are convinced that recent progress in health-care technology will make HPD a safer and more commonly accepted procedure in the near future. The book is designed to share the experience of Japanese researchers with those working in the field throughout the world. The contents include a review of the historical development of HPD in Japan, indications and conditions for HPD, perioperative examinations, and patient management. Also presented are practical aspects of surgical technique and countermeasures against postoperative complications.
