But a desire to give to the world, as completely as pos sible, the works of a writer who has been pronounced by Sir James Mackintosh one of the most profound and eloquent that England has produced, induced the publisher to re-examine with close attention these comparatively neglected papers; and he soon perceived that although unavailable as a whole, they abounded with valuable morceaux which might be advantageously detached.
