Excerpt from Fosteriana: Consisting of Thoughts, Refelections, and Criticisms The present volume of Ana consists, almost exclusively, of Extracts made from such of the late Mr. Foster's Contributions to the Eclectic Review as have not already been published in the collection, entitled Critical Essays. The papers which have here afforded so much of What is behaved to be sterling matter, were, in their original form, too diffuse and mixed to be successfully republished entire, and for this reason had been allowed to remain undisturbed in their original repositories. But a desire to give to the world, as completely as pos sible, the works of a writer who has been pronounced by Sir James Mackintosh one of the most profound and eloquent that England has produced, induced the publisher to re-examine with close attention these comparatively neglected papers; and he soon perceived that although unavailable as a whole, they abounded with valuable morceaux which might be advantageously detached.
